Hi all

This is last minute but I'm taking the wife up to Edinburgh at the start of May - the whole trip will likely be 4 days tops with a day in Edinburgh on the saturday and the Friday ideally being a trip to a wooded meadow filled with bluebells... and need to break the journey up maybe once or twice for some stop overs between York and Edinburgh - Anyone have any glowing recommendations for stop overs please?

Edit: We've done Alnwick, Whitby and Scarborough recently on the in laws Moho so not desperate to go back. SWMBO loves thew beach and I love her so it'll likely be coastal

Edinburgh could be four nights on its own and a base for Stirling with it's castle and the Kelpies and Wheel nearby, back towards Edinburgh and Queens Ferry then across the bridge and up to Culross, it's a friggin goldmine of places to see.

Witches Craig campsite in Stirling was good for us for a couple of nights last year. Got the train into Edinburgh (the fringe was in full swing) on the first day, then onward and upward to Skye after the second night.
Very Picturesque site with good facilities, didn't see a Bluebell though, but many a Highland Coo.
I'll have a search for a picture...

... if you do want a stopover on the way up/down, you could try the area around Bamburgh. I can recommend South Meadows Caravan Park in Belford.

The beach at Bamburgh is fantastic, and there's a couple of free car parks just north of the castle - search for the Hut at Bamburgh. We stayed outside Seahouses at Elford Caravan Park - basic but adequate, and quiet. Just south of Seahouses, the farm site - Annstead Farm Holiday Cottages looks nice, right opposite the beach.

We are also planning a trip oop north in May. A few days in Dumfries & Galloway, a stopover on Loch Lomond and then a few days on Skye. Any recommendations / suggestions welcomed (especially Skye - will we need to book pretty soon?)

Skye caravan and camping site, highly recommended.
Be careful of accidentally turning up at the other one in Portree, as we did, filled with 'undesirables'.

Skye would be a bit of a detour for me. We had hoped to go to my uncles caravan site outside Oban but no way will I have the time/fuel to get there sadly.

Yeah, love the beach, the castle and the village of Bamburgh.

Thanks, but we're very much "on-grid" wimps I'm afraid

Not a member of the C&CC. Got a free year's membership for the C&MC with the van, but haven't activated it because there always seems to be a perfectly good alternative site for less, so can't quite see the point.
I looked at Portree, but you've put me off now! Thinking of trying Camping Skye instead.
Probably arriving second week of May. Wondering if there will be crowds of undesirables, or just crowds of midges? (Or is that what you meant by undesirables?!)

I would still give the Skye campsite a ring for a quote, tell them you're in the 'other club', can they do you a deal?! Worth a call.
The Portree site was filled with 'youth camping club' types, we were surprised when we thought that was where we were staying!
Even if you pay a few quid more it would be worth it for what is a super site in a great location, every Skye attraction is very driveable in every direction. Waze was useful for the pothole warnings, although the potholes really weren't as bad as folk had made out. We did it on 20's, it worked for us, just make sure your spare wheel is accessible in case of trouble!
Midges will come out if the weather is good and the winds are light. The weather was awful when we went with 50mph winds, there weren't many midgies about!

Glenbrittle is nice site on Skye

Glenbrittle would be great if it wasn't for the Fairy Pools traffic, we went to Fairy pools because you have to when in Skye. We fought our way in and forced our way out, a broken down MoHo didn't help, the road is single track with passing places. I believe you would have to do that every time you leave homecamp to go somewhere new. Find somewhere right in the middle of Skye!

Keep 'em coming! Got a few options now. Do you think it's advisable to book well ahead, or will we be OK leaving it to the day before? If the weather is sh1te, we may want to change our plans as we go along. Hoping to do about 10 days total, so would be nice to be flexible.

If it's school holidays you need to book! If not, worth a risk...
