I guess that same sex relationships where illegal and repressed with prison consequences for the poorer sections of society and potential beatings also likely. The wealthy sections of society did as they liked but normally in privacy how ever some more extrovert privileged peopled would flaunt often without consequence for long period of time until someone for what ever reason would make a point of it and the even they may have paid a price. Then their are the references slurs and joke about public schools especially the top ranking ones. Some similarities to drugs over the ages the rich and privileged can traverse life without any repercussions even take cocaine in quite openly in No 10 while someone in a less privileged position would suffer consequences if caught.
Today things are different so far as legality of same sex relationships is concerned and much of society is ambivalent could not give a dam or just tolerant. Their are still those, I am sure who still revert to persecuting people that might be deferent to them selves sometimes with violence and certainly with regrettable behaviour. Many of us older folk will have noticed the changes within our own lifetimes. I know black people and people of colour still suffer great prejudices today even though the law is meant to protect people from that sort of prejudice. I think and hope that these things are much in the minority but their are worrying recent trends with extreme political traits and leanings with some even daring to be very public about it, such as what happed at Anfield Liverpool the other day. It is almost unbelievable that things are returning to those dark days of the past and how unhappy that will be.
I understand where TFS might be coming from why can not people just live their lives but it is complicated and maybe for many the new freedoms are tentative and life could easily revert back so maybe some feel a necessity to collectively celebrate and entrench a way of life. Their are other celebrations that could be looked at also in this country, some of them national such as Armistice Day and poppies and so on I think that we must be one of the few countries in the world that still does that.
