Tailgate gas strut failed.

I fitted genuine Vw 1270Nm gas struts, as my tailgate has a bike rack, plumbers pipe box, thicker carpeted board & the kitchen table attached to it

New Vw part number: 7E7 827 550 E
Cost an arm & a leg, but they fit & lift the tailgate easily now, whatever the weather.

That's exactly my issue - the two that I've bought have identical part numbers but wondering if the one on the RHS should be different...

I'll have a look tonight to see if the 2 have the same or different part numbers.
More news later...

Thanks. My part numbers were slightly different (7E0 827 550 D) - they are the 1200N rather than 1270... but I got it worked out eventually. Some grips on one end allowed me to swivel it around so that it fitted. So I'm all up and running - thanks for checking!

I put deadening mat and insulation in the tailgate a few months ago, been working fine up until yesterday. Had the tailgate open while doing bits in the back and it started to shut. You think the little bit of extra weight and the heat has caused the strut to fail?

Interesting. I thought that when they got warm they were harder to close… perhaps it’s just failing?
Mine failed open and seized…but I’ve had other cars where they’ve got weaker with age

Last year I fitted a pair of new uprated gas struts(1200nm). On Sunday I lifted the tailgate for about 5 mins, then when I closed it there was an almighty bang. On lifting the TG again I could see that the left hand side strut had jumped off it's ball locator at the top and the top of the strut wss jammed in the recess near the tailgate hinges. I have removed the strut from the van but with all my might I am unable to depress the strut against the floor - it just won't budge. Can anyone tell me please, are these things prone to fail, should I be able to compress the strut by hand even a little bit. It seems to have locked out in the extended position. Any advice gratefully received bofore I buy a new replacement pair.
Thanks

I had the exact same problem a couple of months ago of the OEM ones failing. Kept hitting my head where the tailgate didn’t lift high enough. So I replaced them with the acclaimed Transporter HQ ones.

I had the exact same issue a few months ago and replaced them with the THQ ones which have been amazing today. Until in closing big bang. And the nut the strut clips onto had sheared. So now I am going to have the headache of removing that.
