So I picked up a set of OEM T6.1 LED interior roof lights from @Ragster13 a few days ago and have just swapped them over for the existing units. Took all of five minutes to complete.
T6 light pops out with a trim tool at either (short) side.
It's them a simple job of squeezing each side of the connector to release the cable from the light.
T6.1 light has the same connector.
Fit the plug in to the new light.
The T6.1 light only has a release clip at one (shorter) side versus the T6 having two. More cost cutting from VW? So insert the non clip side in first and then push the clip side in.
The T6.1 are no longer switchable on/off from the light itself and now only illuminate when the doors are open. More VW cost cutting?
T6.1 light has three LEDs and gives a better spread of light than my T6 fitted with Transported HQ LED bulb. Looks better and brighter in my opinion.
T6 and t6.1 side by side
T6.1 light looks cheap in comparison to the T6, but I guess it's a bit of cost cutting and technology moving on that has caused this.
For this wanting to change their T6 bulb in these units then you simply slide off the white cover upwards (directional arrow on cover). I couldn't find a decent image of this online when I did it and the YouTube video I watched didn't give much in the way of decent close ups.
The bulb is held in place with tension from two metal prongs(?) and easily pops out for you to fit your replacement bulb. The image shows the THQ LED replacement bulb in place with the heatsink facing to the inside of the light housing.
Conclusion: T6 versus T6.1
The T6.1 light gives better light from a cheap looking housing. All, especially versus standard bulb T6 light.
Can I live without the on/off switch on the light? Most likely as I can't remember using it much or at all.
The cost I paid for the lights was as much as I paid for the bulbs from THQ so there's not much of a loss if I change back to the T6 lights.
Rain is still chucking down, so no replacing the grill strips or side indicators today. Gotta love the Scottish weather.
