T6 And E-permits At The Local Tip.

Many councils up and down the UK are now using a permit system for commercial vehicles visiting tthieer household waste recycling centres.

SWB vans all have to have a permit that allows only 12 visits per year.

Our county council states that camper vans with windows and seats in the rear do NOT require a permit, HOWEVER, if the same vehicle goes to the tip with seats removed, it does need a permit.

I have queried, with my council, whether my kombi needs a permit or not. (as it clearly has rear windows and rear seats which I will not be removing).

Anyone else had any experience with this and, if so, any input?.

Guess every council will have different rules. Not been to the tip in my T6 but did ask the question the other month and was told if it's a camper no permit need and park up outside let them know and they'll open the height barrier. Doubt my T6 will ever go to the tip though, the thought of filling it with rubbish gives me shivers :)

I've been to the tip no problem in my kombi, first time I got a permit and they actually said I didn't need it so never bothered since.

I asked the question at my local tip (Gloucestershire County Council / Stroud Council) and they told me that campervans are regarded as a 'normal' car but they might ask for a glance inside. I didn't about removing seats but, then again, I regard the Smartbed Evo in the back as a pretty much an 'immovable object'!

Edits:£15 for 12 visits, think it used to be £12.

I don't have a big problem with it having a kombi and the van will do in one trip what'd take me 3-4 visits in the car. And if I have loads i load the car up too and return 30mins later.

I wouldn't want to be the one to test it but reckon a kombi with dummy rear glass might slip under radar...

I contacted Leicestershire council re my 8 seat window van classed as a car on DVLA and they said I need a permit.

Had quite a discussion with the council after escalating the matter, saying I’d throw recycling / items they sell in the bin etc and ultimately it can be a van with the seats out so needs a permit.

Whilst it is 12 visits in 2 years the guy said I can re-apply for a new permit anytime and I’d probably get a call asking what I took to the tip. If all household then I’d get another permit as they dont track what people take.

I plan to photo van contents when I go so when they refuse I can prove what I took.

I got the impression its some red tape to make things slightly difficult but not strictly enforced.

My county council says each household is entiltled to 12 visits in a SWB van.

It also says that the householder is allowed to hire or borrow a van and it's registration number must be declared and it will count as one of that housholds 12 trips.

However, I sometimes take stuff to the tip for my mum, but despite the above, she can hire or borrow any vehicle as long as it's not mine as my vans reg is already against my households permit.

Trailers under 5 feet long can be taken to the tip without a permit, BUT, as I will be towing it there with my van, (vivaro, not T6), this will count as 1 trip even if the van is empty.

Leeds city council have a 3 tonne limit, so has I have a T32 I’m reduced to parking outside and carrying stuff in. I like to make a big show of it has the rules only changed a few years ago, and it’s not as if I’m a builder dumping half a tonne of cr@p in there.

Been tip today in the van (first time out with all the seats removed) and wasnt asked for my permit albeit I had one ready! I guess its just down to who is on the gate.

In Shropshire, they are OK with me going in the Velle, whether it has seats in it or not. I generally take a trailer tho', which I need a permit for, (12 free ones per year) but if I go on a weekday, they don't often come over and ask for it, so I get to keep it for next time.

All Leicestershire sites have a sentry guard at the gate checking what you’re dumping!

3 visits now and not had to show permit. I had a bit of paint on the last visit, which I declared, to be told you need a permit for that! I thought that would trigger a challenge for a van permit but no!!

So still got 12 lives :D
