T6.1 Tailgate Release part number?

My 2023 has the electric release tailgate, feels like it has some sort of micro switch in the rear of the handle which has failed. I've had a look and all wires are connected and the switch on the inside of the tailgate works fine so im assuming there is some sort of micro switch behind the handle that needs replacing, can anyone advise on this please. It is under wattanty but has got to go to a commercial VW place which is a ball ache for me, I've just phoned my nearest which is an hour away to first be told they don't do waiting appointments and they they would but it could be a 3 or 4 hour job, so basically a days lost earnings for a warranty job that looks like a half hour job to me.

Does anyone know if this is the case or what part i'd need because it might just be cheaper to do it myself, thanks very much guys.

I have a MY21 6.1 Caravelle and yes it's a full electric release.

If you're going to investigate/repair yourself then get Carista/OBD11 (if you haven't already) and see what fault codes are possibly being logged. You don't want to replace the physical switch to find out it's a wiring or module fault.

Keep in mind if it's under warranty then repairing it not in line with VW approach may impact future warranty claims around the tailgate.

If you have VIP membership you can access the wiring diagram downloads which may help - if you are sure it's the switch and you've already had any trim off inside it might be useful to temporarily connect another switch to confirm. I've not needed to be inside mine but I seem to remember that (not helpfully) the tailgate loom is all one colour (white?) as it generally comes as a complete assembly...

I've updated the title of your thread to try and grab the attention of forum members who have access to part numbers.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply, I've now got it booked into VW for a while you wait appointment on 18 Aug, hopefully it doesn't need the whole 4 hours. It's a pain because its a 2 hour round trip, sods law that the VW commercial that was ten minutes away closed a while ago. The first VW garage i tried were about as helpful as rabies with the receptionist telling me that if they found the vehicle to be dangerous they wouldn't let me have it back.

Little update, today the tailgate catch has started to work as it should, is the issue i described something I could have caused by inadvertantly pressing fob buttons or similar or have I an intermittant fault.

I suspect intermittent issue, possibly water ingress that's dried out?

I know the brake light fitting was prone to letting water in in earlier T6s.

For warranty VW van centres normally need a diagnosis to claim on it - if the issue left fault codes logged that should be enough even if it isn't doing it anymore. Do you have a reader to check - obviously in this case don't clear them...

I've had the van since March and its definately had water ingress into the tailgate, I removed the little rubber bungs along the bottom lip to allow any water to drain so wonder if that has caused an issue, it's something I can mention to VW when I take it in. I don't have a reader but have been thinking of getting an icarsoft, I had one for my Vito but it was the Mercedes only version. A mate has a Carista i can have but £60 a year is a bit steep imho.

Being able to reliably read the VW codes can save you a lot of money though, either through being able to fix stuff yourself or early intervention.

I think if you get the Carista Evo it does lifetime diagnostics without a subscription - you only need an active subscription to take actions and I think that's monthly. I have both Carista and OBD11 but use OBD11 most.

Taking the bungs out is fairly common advice, I must remember to do it to mine.

Quick update, the latch failed again and went into VW Commercial in Bristol today who were excellent, they have replace the exterior tailgate handle and all working now. Its booked in again so they can do a leak test to try and find out where the water got into the tailgate.

Thanks for the update (and the reminder I've still not taken the bungs out of my own tailgate!)

Resurrecting this old thread but last week my handle stopped working. I now have to open the tailgate with my key.
My Bus is over 3 years old now but I have another 2 years of the All In.
Just called my main dealer and he said they have had 2 in recently for the same problem.
Vw came back with a yes for one and a no for another.
Dealer said they will investigate for free but won’t know the outcome until they send off the documentation to VW.
Got to drop the Bus off and wait in town.
Might just buy a new unit rather than lose a days wages.
Joke!
