T6.1 California PR 1D7 towbar prep – missing rear wiring or wrong kit?

Hi everyone,
I’m trying to figure out the correct towbar installation on my T6.1 California. Original westfalia towbar!

The van has factory preparation (PR code 1D7).

Under the passenger seat (right side, I’m from Italy) I have the towbar control unit already installed and wired. From there I can clearly see the loom going into the body.

At the rear, behind the 230V socket, I found:
– one free 6-pin connector

– another small black module with a connector that I don’t recognise

And this is the bottom part of this black modulo connector:

My question is:
is this the correct rear wiring for the factory towbar prep, or am I missing part of the loom?

At the moment I’m a bit confused because two VW dealers suggested installing kit 7LA055204A, (with include full wiring and control unit) which would require running new wiring through the vehicle and removing quite a lot of interior parts.
I think that it looks like a complete retrofit kit and not the correct kit for my California!
Considering the van already has PR 1D7 and the control unit installed, this doesn’t seem right to me and makes me think they might not be fully aware of how this specific setup is configured.
They insist this is the correct kit, but I’m not convinced.
Has anyone with PR 1D7 already installed the OEM towbar and can confirm what is actually required?

You do have towbar prep and the connectors at the back are what you use.
You just need the wiring kit that goes between the connectors and the towbar with your choice of plug (7 pin, 13 pin, round, rectangular etc)

I see, thanks — that’s exactly what I was starting to suspect.

What I don’t understand is this:
I specifically ordered a genuine VW towbar and my vehicle left the factory with genuine towbar preparation (PR code 1D7).

So why isn’t Volkswagen supplying a proper OEM wiring solution that connects directly to these rear connectors?
It feels quite strange that the “official” solution is a full retrofit kit (7LA055204A), which duplicates components already installed on the vehicle, instead of a simple OEM adapter lead from the factory connectors to the 13-pin socket.
Is there actually a VW part for this, or is it normal that you have to rely on third-party suppliers like Erich Jaeger even with factory towbar prep?
 
You could ask your VW daeler if they just sell the extension piece, after explaining that you already have towbar prep installed.
It may come with the towbar >

I’ve already contacted four different VW dealers, but unfortunately none of them has been helpful. They all just enter my VIN into the system and come back with the same kit: 7LA 055 204 A, which is the complete set including the control unit — something I already have installed on the vehicle.
What I actually need is different
  • confirmation of the factory towbar preparation (PR code 1D7) wiring layout
  • and ideally a wiring diagram showing what should already be present
  • plus certainty that the connector I found is indeed the towbar connector
At the moment, nobody seems to go beyond what the system suggests, and I need a proper technical answer, not just a VIN-based part lookup.
If anyone has access to wiring diagrams or has done this retrofit on a pre-wired van, that would really help.

Trailer Hitch Preparation​


Not all T6's are supplied by Volkswagen with a socket to connect any towbar electrics to in the boot, their is a sticker located just above your feet on the steering column panel, you will need to remove the panel as the sticker is on the back of that. In the log book the code is on the bottom left of the vehicle date page, see images below, either 1D7, which means it has trailer prep, or 1Do means it does not have trailer prep. If there is no trailer prep on the vehicle you will need to order the no trailer prep electrics kit.

As I already mentioned, VW has confirmed that my van has factory towbar preparation (PR code 1D7), and I’ve seen proof that the control unit is already installed.

What I’m trying to understand is:
  • where the wiring actually ends
  • what connectors should be present
  • and which parts are really needed to complete the installation
The only kit VW suggests (7LA 055 204 A) includes the full wiring to the front and the control unit — both already installed on my California.

I also checked PF Jones instructions for vehicles with factory prep: they mention two connectors (8-pin and 12-pin).
On my van I’ve only found the 8-pin, i don’t found the 12-pin.
So I’m trying to understand how a T6.1 California with PR 1D7 is actually wired, to complete the installation properly (not a full retrofit).
If anyone has a wiring diagram or direct experience, that would really help.
I’m honestly surprised how hard it is to get this kind of technical information, even from VW.

Honestly, I’m not entirely sure how to interpret those kit differences either.
What I can say is that Volkswagen, using my VIN, keeps pointing me to the 7LA 055 204 A kit, which from the installation manual looks like a full retrofit kit (including wiring from front to rear and control unit).
 
Why are you obsessing over VW dealers, just go to a towbar shop and order a kit for vehicles with towbar prep (often abbreviated to TP) and the instructions that come with it will tell you where to connect the wiring but it will be a loose connector in the rear quarter panel area of your van.
The only issue here is the (lack of) knowledge and understanding of VW dealers and the systems they run on

That’s a fair point, and I understand what you’re saying.
The reason I’m still trying to clarify this through VW is quite simple: the vehicle is still under warranty, it has factory towbar preparation (PR 1D7), and I have already ordered a genuine Volkswagen towbar through the official network, including paying a deposit.
For this reason, I would expect a clear and coherent OEM solution, rather than having to rely on aftermarket kits just to understand how the system is actually configured.
As of now, however, I haven’t received any real technical answer from the VW network: they simply suggest a full retrofit based solely on what their systems indicate, without verifying the actual vehicle configuration and without any real interest in investigating further…
I find this unacceptable
