Sump Removal

Hi all,

Just in the middle of replacing the crank shaft oil seal whilst doing the timing belt. I was hoping to do the oil pump belt at the same time assuming I could remove the sump. Unfortunately it looks like the most ridiculous design in that you can't get the sump off on my model without removing the gearbox and fly wheel which is confirmed in the manual.

"Depending on the type of fly wheel, bolts-13-and-14-may not be accessible.
Flywheel removal necessary:
♦ Vehicles with dual clutch gearbox
♦ Vehicles with dual clutch gear box and all-wheel drive
♦ Vehicles with single turbocharger and 6-speed manual gearbox
♦ Vehicles with single turbocharger, 6-speed manual gear box and all wheel drive"

Was just wondering if anybody had a work around? I know it's been asked before but I live in hope.

Looks like I could get the bolts loose but don't want to break the sump seal without knowing if it will come off for sure as I wont be able to seal it up properly again

I'll probably have to do the bodge slide in job of the crank shaft oil seal carrier and leave the oil pump belt until the duel mass fly wheel is knackered.

Not 100% sure on your model but on any I have done there is a slot in the back of the flywheel. If you rotate the flywheel through the crank pulley and you will see it. Then you use a ball end allen key to get to the two bolts.

Cheers, were any of the models of the ones you've done on that list mentioned in the manual?
Unfortunately I've got the timing belt off at the moment so can't rotate it to investigate. Looking at it though I can’t see how any slot in fly wheel would help as it just looks like the gearbox is in the way.

Yes gearbox off, if there is a slot in the DMF it may save you removing it.
While your in there - crankshaft position sensor renewal? In theory it can be removed without removing the gearbox but almost impossible. Depends if you think a new sensor is more reliable than the old.
Terrible design, like most things these days no thought to how it’s maintained.

Sorry I do not think I have removed a sump from any of those models. I will ask a friend who may have done.

Yeah those sump bolts can be a bit of a pain on these.

The manual says to remove the flywheel, but in reality some people manage it by turning the engine and lining things up so you can sneak a tool in through the gap. It’s fiddly and takes a bit of patience, but it can save a lot of work.

With DSG and 4Motion though, space is tighter, so it might be more awkward than on the simpler setups. Probably worth having a look first before committing to anything major.

If you give it a go, would be good to hear how you get on

I spoke to my friend, yesterday he changed an oil pump on a 2.0tdi with DSG DQ500 auto box without removing the gearbox. Providing your van is not a 4motion it may be worth putting the belt back on and turning it over by hand

Thanks for asking Phill, unfortunately mine is 4motion. 🙄
I assume you meen "without removing gearbox, not sump" as to do the oil pump without removing the sump would be some serious Jedi shit.

Sorry mate, yes without removing the gearbox. What’s in the way on your van? Could you remove the prop or is it the transfer box?

The Corteco crank seals do have a seal on the bottom so if you do have a go without removing the sump try and get a Corteco seal.

Nothing obviously different about the 4 motion. Just an incredibly small hole to try and get the two sump bolts out through at an angle. To be fair it looks like the box is in the way more than the dm flywheel.

Yeah I read this somewhere else so its on order. Obvious solution to this problem but it's almost like two wrongs to make a right.
