Sudden shut down when starting

Wondering if anyone can help, advise or share their experiences….

A few weeks ago I tried to start the engine soon after a fairly long drive, it turned over and suddenly shut off this happened about 3 maybe 4 times. I was on the chain ferry in Poole, at an angle (nose down) with low fuel… we assumed maybe it just struggled to pick up some fuel? I managed to start it and went on our way, not to experience it again on that journey.

It happened again 2 days ago, no unusual angle this time but again, with fairly low fuel. But it has happened again this evening, this time with plenty of fuel. I tried 3 times to start the engine, all of which resulted in the engine turning off suddenly. I then attempted a little throttle whilst turning over and it started fine and continued to tick over fine.

Each time this has happened, it’s when the engine was warm, not cold. Not sure if that has any bearing.

Any thoughts??

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

What year is your van? Any fault codes appear? Sounds like a fuel issue.

Is your servicing up to date? Fuel filter.

Does it actually start then cut out or does it crank and stop cranking before it starts?

Maybe it picked up some crap from the bottom of the tank when the level was low?

Scan for fault codes and post on the Forum.

It’s a 21 plate, no fault codes appear and nothing appeared when scanning. I only have Carista so may not have shown everything.

Started it again early (after the main issue) and it’s fine again. It was services about 2 months ago with all new filters! It’s booked in at my local VW but not for a while. Was hoping to get up to NEC this weekend in it but think I’ll leave it just in case

It cranks, hits 1000rpm and violently shuts off. It had a awful rattling sound when it was happening, tried some throttle and started fine, rocked over perfectly smooth and it then drove perfectly.

What did the service include 2 months ago? Perhaps a faulty part was used? or something not installed correctly?

Keep the fuel level above half for a 4week test to see if it does it again.

Running the van out of fuel is very bad for the HPFP.... High pressure fuel pump.

Could be lift pump sucking air in and causing a airlock?

Of the above test will rule that out.

Hi Matt
Did you have any luck with this i am experiencing exactly the same issue ?

I had a cam position sensor replaced about three years back and was told that the sensor sits underneath the charge cooler on top of the 102 hp engine and tends to cook and go out of it's normal range leading to lack of coherence and poor starting, from memory it made the stop/start stop working too so not all bad.

Unfortunately not, I had it scanned by VW but I assume because it’s still under warranty, their desire to fix it was very very small!

Hasn’t happened for a few months now but the most recent time, after first attempt I scanned it and didn’t find anything. Although I am only using the Carista so may not be advanced enough.

Likewise I scanned it woth OBD11 and nothing came up. It will start ok once it gets a bit of throttle but noisier than I would like

You’ll find it’ll also start if you just leave the engine off for a few minutes. Give it time to chill out for a moment and it’ll go and I’ve not had to use any throttle. I don’t know if it’s starter motor related… because, like you said, it is incredibly rattly!
