Speed restrictions on the VW panel van?

The DVLA guy said it needs to look like a traditional camper to be classified as one and look that way to everyone when driving in traffic.
Thats the key word right there. The classification is a DVLA distinction used solely for taxation and licencing, nothing more.

The type, as I may have mentioned, is determined by Con and Use, nothing to do with the Swansea mafia.

Type is the only pertinent factor for our speed limit discussion.

Only the muppets at the Swansea Mafia can do that!
Agreed. If the V5 data in isolation cannot determine the relevant speed limit for a vehicle (which we know it cannot), then the DVLA should desist from providing such data to those seeking to use it as a basis for issuing NIPs.

I was taught the difference as a young spotty copper when I did the traffic course. It doesnt help that these days there is no traffic officers course (aside from the driving qualification) so coppers these days tend to be rather uneducated on the matter through no fault of their own.

I've also heard tell of some supervisors, similarly uneducated, actively telling bobbies to use the DVLA category asnrhe basis for targeting vehicles for speeding offences. It didn't take long for the weight of complaints to be such the supervisor in question quickly found himself thus educated.

And using untrained civilians as process clerks is the cherry on top,

As I understand it a swb Kombi is dual purpose and car speeds but a lwb is too heavy and doesn’t.
A note of caution;
That may be correct in many cases but my T30 SWB is too heavy too because it's 4Motion, which adds around 200Kg to its unladen weight, putting it slightly over the limit for the dual purpose vehicle category.

right, I tried not to get involved here but the reclassification thing came to a head for me when I found out that the road tax goes up a fair bit when you're a camper... So she identifies as a camper but her legal status is van with windows and she does car speeds and will forever more

I have photos of my van converted in anticipation of a NIP - and the sink and hob ARE still installed...

I was with you until you introduced the far-fetched notion of a supervisor being re-trained…!

Civvies with zero policing experience have no place in copper land. At the very least, they should all be obliged to do two years “on the job” before any sideways or upwards career move. There are plenty of time-served coppers who would love to swap the beat for a desk job but are pushed out the door.

I’ll get off my soapbox now…!

Only if registered as a camper from new, as mentioned in the reference article. A conversion retains its N1 taxation class, regardless of whether it’s a camper or van with windows. My converted PV is actually classed as a Motor Caravan as it was converted and re-registered before the DVLA started playing silly buggers. But I still only pay PV road tax.

Thankfully the muppet extermination is on its way. There will soon be an office block in Swansea that is mothballed as the computer erases their justification. What I would give for the opportunity to walk through that building leaving a flurry of brown envelopes in my wake!!!

The building next to DVLA is a new data centre just to process this thread, River Severn is predicted to rise in temperature by 3 deg C.
