Spare wheel fitment

A T30 could have the larger 340mm brakes as standard as the van's load capacity has nothing to do with the brake size.
That being said, a 17" steel is a common spare size and would fit over any VW OEM brake caliper. As would a variety of 18" steels.
I don't believe that 255/45/17 is a very common size but as an example, 235/65/17 is and would be very close to what you currently have. Certainly close enough for a 2wd van, if that's what you have.
215/65/18 is a perfect match but availability and load ratings would need to be checked.
Have a play on "willtheyfit.com" to compare sizes.
However both your current size and any equivalent is a lot larger than the 265/40/20 mentioned above. About 20mm in diameter in fact.
That will be difficult to fit in the spare wheel carrier without modification.

I was wondering if i could fit a cheap spare not an expensive 20" alloy

The same? I run 265/40/20 and my spare is the same.
Hi @Pontius - I hope it's ok to jump on this thread? Can I ask when you store your spare wheel? I have a 255/45/18 spare and I want it to go under my van where the 16" clayton currently is. But apparently the new spare doens't fit, according the alloy supplier. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

Hi HANA. I bought my Kombi at the end of last year and it came with the 20” spare under the van, so is possible. I don’t know if any modifications were required. I bought it from Bognor motors and they are very helpful so with giving them to call to ask their advice. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

I'd imagine it's just extending either end of the carrier to allow for the extra width of the tyre
