Should I two tone ?

My recently bought van is nice inside and mechanically good but pretty rough on the body work with badly painted bumpers, rusty wheel arch and varies dents and badly filled areas. The paint guy we used a couple of times for wife's car said he can do everything and make it look like new but the price is the top of my budget. I asked about two tone and he says he could do that for the same price if he stops it just inside the doors and doesnt do the shuts. He is very good and will do it well but I'm just not sure how it'll look stopping inside the door 🤔 Has anyone else got two tone like this or does everyone go for the full job. I cant afford any more so if I'll look naff I'd rather stay all white and in budget.

Its entirely your call.

Im of an age when two-tone was used to cheaply tart up cars thst had started to rust below the belt line, so my natural (if misguided in this case) inclination is to avoid it.

On the other hand others love the 1950s look, and theres nothing wrong with that.

If two-tone is less expensive, is there any reason why he cant paint the same areas as he would with two-tone but in the original colour? Any halfway decent paint jockey should be able to hide, disguise or blend the new paint at body counters, swage lines, etc.

First question is tailgate or barn doors? The obvious colour change line on a tailgate doesn't line with the swage line along the sides, whereas with a barn door you can continue the swage line around.

I probably didnt explain very well. He quoted originally to do the whole van in white as it already is. I asked if he could two tone in for the same price and he said he could but only if he leaves the door shuts etc and stops the colour just inside the door. So the price is the same for both but I was wondering if it would look bad when you open the doors and its still white 🤔

Ah, in that case I'd personally get it redone in the original colour.

Not getting door shuts etc done smacks of a cheap job, which in a sense it would be. This would put me off, but won't worry other potential buyers.

Check, but I believe factory two tone California's don't even get the full paint treatment into the door shuts from VW from new.

The 6/6.1 Cali two tone is painted an inch or so into the shut so the base colour isnt visible at all when the doors are closed. The T7 Cali is fully painted into the shuts.

I think his plan was to take it inside a little so probably similar to the 6/6.1 Cali. If I thought I'd see white with the door shut that'd definitely be a no.

I actually think two tome works better with a tailgate than barn doors:

Thats interesting, I'll check into that.
I had a look on some ‘for sale’ pictures, and the VW two tone Calis look like they start with a coloured van, and paint the top white, and they don’t paint the top half of the shuts.

I’m having a similar conversation with myself on painting a white van two tone.

I found a video advert on FB marketplace for a two tone grey/white van and the shuts hadn't been done and it didn't look too bad. It's even crossed my mind that if I hate it I could do the shuts myself later with rattle cans, but like lots of household jobs I'd probably have good intentions but never get round to it 🤣🤣

Its a bit weird, I think I've seem some like that, but also some where they start with a white van and paint the lower half, leaving the shuts white:
