Seat covers - side airbags

I have been looking for some front seat covers for my 8 seat T6 since April - no joy anywhere and kicking myself for not buying the bus with leather. Has anyone had any success with aftermarket covers??

I should have my Seatskinz covers delivered today; I'll let you know how I get on.

Reviews are great and loads of photos on their FB page.

Are they stitched in such a way that enables a 'perforated' style panel to tear as the thoracic airbag activates giving it the ability to fully inflate? I'd hate to think that they could prevent the inflation of the airbag.
I only make the point because we use steering wheel airbag protectors at work when cutting people out of RTC's, and whilst it is a Kevlar fabric, its only as good as the stitching, and that thing will stop a drivers bag from deploying into the casualty or responder in the event that the bag is triggered during cutting. Therefore if the seat covers are overly stitched then they could interfere with the supplementary restraint systems.
In case your interested this is how it works

Just fitted these from Action Van in the back of mine (really just so my dog can sit on the seat and see out!) water proof etc. Really pleased with the fit and quality and not overly expensive..ActionVan | VW T5 Seat Covers

how do they look?
Pretty good - well made, thick and apart from the headrest error, they are a very good fit with "holes" for the armrest height adjuster wheels, a decent back pocket (we lost these with the VW waterproof covers on our last Cali). We've gone for the fabric middle with "leather look" sides which extends to the headrest and armrest covers; thinking it'll be nice and durable and resistant to us treading on the "shoulders" of the seats to get to the top bed.

I've got the right tool (very large torx OR allen key) to remove the armrests so hoping that fitting them should be okay.

Do they have slits for the side airbags?

The website states clearly "original airbag technology" but I'm not actually sure how it works. I've pinged an email to them asking the question.

From their website...

DO THEY PROVIDE FOR BUILT IN SIDE AIRBAGS, SPLIT REAR SEATS, ARMRESTS, SEAT ADJUSTERS, FOLDING TRAYS AND CUP HOLDERS?
Yes, our covers are fully tailored to your specific model and version and will take care of all the safety and comfort features, all products sold by Seatskinz UK are TUV certificated for the airbags correct triggering and made using the latest and best technology, Seatskinz products are made with the best materials and come with a 3 year warranty and a 28 day money back guarantee. This is unique to the custom profiling market and is not offered by any trimmers or other seat cover suppliers. 'You've seen the rest, now by from the BEST.' SEATSKINZ UK.

Allot of these airbag compatible covers just have a weak seam holding the edges together, some, like the escape gear covers just have a simple flap of material on the side that tucks into itself.

That's what the Seatskinz have AFAIK - "breakaway" seams in the relevant areas.
They're TUV approved so should be fine. I think most car seats with airbags have the same idea - I had a good look at ours and I can't actually see where the airbags would come out.

@Polzeylad you got any photos of them on
Not yet - as mentioned, they got the size of the headrests wrong (the T6 ones are 50mm taller - that might just be on the Cali and Caravelle though?) so they are doing an "emergency" job making new ones and I plan to fit them once they arrive. Should be a week or two.

hi guys where is the best place to buy 2 seat single covers for my t6 , ALSO its the new type head rests , from the t5.1 , cheers ,

We've had a nine week wait, the wrong stitch colour, the wrong headrest size and then no indication a specialist tool was needed; they've tried to sort the issues but we now have a totally rounded off spline armrest bolt. The metal in the bolts is very soft. So I can't remove the armrests so can't fit the covers. I now give up and have said I want to send them back.

Many hours wasted; needs better lead times, proper QCing and I'd say don't try and fit them at home. TBH they also looked quite plasticky and a bit "taxi" too.

Sadly I can't recommend them.

I got some covers from Turtle Covers, I've got to say that the fit is excellent and they look like they'll last for years, even though they really do get some hammer. Certainly worth looking at:thumbsup:

Returned them; had to contribute a tenner towards postage but I'm okay with that. Hopefully get refunded shortly.
They need to let people know it needs a specialist tool (I tried the "correct" sized allen key and rounded off the set rest bolt - they sent me the correct tool but it was too late - the bolt will need cutting or machining out if I ever want to remove the armrests), they need to QC properly (they were very clearly T5.1 covers - I was VERY specific about the T6 seats being a different size - and sent exact measurements) and they need to use the correct colours.

All in all a bit of a waste of a nine week wait; I'm planning on just getting them professionally cleaned once in a while. We had waterproof VW seat covers on the Cali but I never really liked them. Could get them re-trimmed in leather but not sure I can be bothered (and I actually quite like the T6 Cali seat design).

We are going to wait till they bad then get them recovered in leather.
