Rough idle when cold?

Hello, I’m hoping someone can help me with an issue I’ve been having recently with my van. Whenever it’s started up from cold the idle is very rough sounding almost like it’s on 3 cylinders, the revs are all over the place, but doesn’t cut out, can also notice it is jerky when driving until it is up to temperature and then it is fine. Also noticed if you stand behind the van it smells very fumey, again this goes away once warmed up. The only other thing I have noticed is that when the van is doing a regen despite being warmed up it still has a slight miss to it on idle when the revs are slightly increased. The van is a 2019 150ps highline just over 50k miles. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar issue or can help please! Have tried various egr cleaner & new fuel filter.

Did you manage to sort this? I have the same problem….Thanks

Could be a glow plug problem.

Can you get a video clip of a cold start and drop a link to it here?

You need to get the van scanned for codes as well to get some direction.

Yes that’s the thing no codes in engine module. Smell from exhaust on cold start and engine is mis firing. Then once warm all totally fine and wouldn’t know there was a problem.

Sounds like glow plugs..

Have you got access to vcds ?

@mmi is there a known glow plug test via vcds?

Or if not, what PIDs are best to look at for glow plug tests.

Just a test for glow time control module.
However, I'm confident that a failed glow plug would manifest itself as emission warning light on dash 1734606611638.png

Only these two, however I don't expect to see anything unusual in them.
  • IDE00363 Glow status
  • IDE00364 Pre-glow time
Perhaps have a look into

I’ve had the same lumpy first morning start. Drive to the end of the street, turn off then start back up again, you wouldn’t think anything was wrong. I’ve run a couple of bottles of the VW additive through 2 tanks off fuel and it’s back to normal, I’ve always been very sceptical about additives, but thought it was worth a try and it’s worked. Could’ve been a bit of shit in the injectors.
