Road Tax - What are you paying?

I think they’re both excluded from PIP as they are both of pensionable age and haven’t been in receipt of PIP before, so wouldn’t be eligible to claim

It might be worth them researching it as they're are other potential avenues which may or may not apply.

In my case I'm a mere sprog at 60, but I get the PIP as on my worst days I'm not walking any further than the bathroom, and on my best days it's walking stick assisted.

I know a girl that got a new PIP car at 16, and legally learned to drive in it at 16.
She's now 19 and on her second car, a Toyota SUV to accommodate her 2 kids.

Trust me, her only issues are keeping her knees together!

20% of cars registered are Motability, so they need to claw the losses back somehow!

They pay for the car from the mobility element of their PIP/DLA/whatever. It's not free. Anything other than very basic or cheap cars requires cash up front, often a significant chunk depending on the value of the car, and they have to find that themselves.

Looked at Motability myself, but it's far from the least expensive lease option so never bothered. Mrs Sasquatch's BYD is in a lease sdheme for civik servants and has less expensive monthly payments and didnt require the £2000 down payment that motability wanted, so It's not quite as generous or exciting as the Daily Mail makes out.

Of the 33.9 million cars on the UK roads only around 635,000 at any one moment are Motability vehicles.

But at 3 years old they are sold on to the great unwashed, and they get a new car.
The cast off then becomes one of the 33.9 million.
Tax exempt with insurance and servicing thrown in .... What's not to like?

It's a far cry from my 20k down with 48 payments of £512

And it doesn't alter the simple fact that 1 in 5 new cars are Motability. Add to that the EV zero rate, and those paying 30 quid, and the shortfall has to be clawed back somehow.

Now I could tell quite a few tales of Motability abuse (as I'm sure many could) which just takes funding away from genuine claimants.
I have said for years now that Motability cars should have the first 2 letters on the plate reserved for them, such as MB or DB, then an appropriate year plate put on at 3 years old.
This would not only take away the kudos, but also make it easy to spot correctly parked cars in disabled bays (You know, like builders merchants ang gym's) .
It may also make Shaz think twice about getting all the cleaning gear out the new car and going to work.

Or bring these back

Tax exemption they get anyway - that's nothing whatsoever to do with Motability itself. I get the free tax concession and use it on my van which is my daily. It is indeed quite likeable, but I'd like it even more if I could walk very far.

Insurance and servicing and thrown in with the bulk of lease deals. It's thrown in with the lease on my Wife's BYD and no one gets huffy about that, so what exactly is your point?

Not a moan  Pull the other one. It's nothing but sour grapes because you're not getting it.

I've noticed that Brad Pitt is better looking and wealthier than me, but I've gotten over it.

Old Brad can also walk unaided, so he does have something I would have good cause to be envious of. Think yourself lucky you're not disabled, besause I can guarantee youd claim the road tax exemption for yourself and wouldn't have any "facts" left to talk about.

I'm paying nearly a thousand pounds to tax 3 motors because others wish to pay nothing.
Not a moan, but a fact.
Nah. You're paying that much coz the government believes they can get away with charging.

The Motability scheme (and PIP) is massively abused, people know how to game the system, there are even people on social media who offer coaching to applicants!

Totally agree obvs there is genuine claimants but others seriously take the piss

In Queensland, Australia, we pay the equivalent of £333 for our annual registration (which includes qld’s version of road tax and compulsory third party tax insurance) on our 2024 T6.1 Cali. This is slight less than usual (£366) due to a state government cost of living reduction initiative in place at the moment. If I was 65+ these numbers would halve. This means that I’m effectively conflicted… on one hand it would be cheaper if I was over 65, on the other hand I’m happy to be celebrating still being in my 50s (well for two more weeks, any way!)

W o W . Stayed in peppermint grove in Perth for s short time. More of an extended holiday. Beautiful country. Seen a few sharks , decent sizes too. Went to Rottnest island I think it’s called. Stunning beach .

You could apply that kind of logic to fuel duty, VAT and taxation in general.
I think a more accurate assessment would be the Government know that they can get away with over charging the majority to fund those that refuse to pay.
A career choice for many, but I firmly believe the whole house of cards is about to implode.
Gov.UK borrowed 20.2 billion last month to balance the books in an ever spiralling out of control debt.

Me, I'm just a fully paid up NI contributor with 41 continuous years employment under my belt, although I have to keep on paying in for another 10 years for not a penny more.

It's just how it is in this socialist paradise I am stupidly proud to call Great Britain.

I was on higher rate come tax the last 11 of my career, and Mrs Sasquatch is on enhanced or "top rate" for very high earners.

Having paid more income tax than 94% of the population I make no apologies for claiming the road tax exemption now I am disabled and struggle to walk.

If Daily Mail readers who haven't contributed nearly as much as we have in the first place dont like it then that's a shame. In the mean time, we're happy to subsidise your child benefit, your lower income tax rate, your free NHS healthcare (we're private) and all the other concessions you conveniently forget about, so this socialist paradise is working out quite well for you.
