Removing old carpet lining - awful job?

How much of a job is it to remove carpet lining and glue residue back to clean-ish paint? Looking at buying a van already lined and not convinced I want to keep the carpet the same - if at all. I don't want my hands tied from day one.

Cellulose thinner will dissolve the residue but will take the paint with it.

That seems quite a trade-off. Not too bad on arches etc that could be quickly recoated but not an ideal situation around windows. Anything else that would work OK that wouldn't wreck the paint or are we then into the territory of days and days of graft?

I have used acetone - all depends upon the make up of the adhesive. You must wear gloves when using acetone as it strips the oils out of your skin like caustic does. Cellulose shouldn't take paint off - cellulose paints haven't been used on vehicles for donkey's years.
