Rear brake calipers replaced. Brake locked

Good day. I have replaced the rear calipers on my vw t6 2007. Bled the systems through 3 times🫣. Today when we wanted to take it for a spin the rear wheel were locked tight even though the hand brake was completely release. When I looked in from the back it seemed the handbrake lever on the caliper was completely against the return stop and the ball end on the cable was completely loose, by 3mm about. Fitted new discs and pads as well. Their was some gap between pads and disc. Should I have pressured the breaks before trying the hand break🤔🤔. And how would i get it loose. Thank you in advance

Yes sounds like you adjusted the handbrake cable before pressing the foot pedal. Back the handbrake cable off and see how you get on

Hi Phill. Well took the calipers of and turned the piston in all the way. Then on the brakes first then handbrake. That did not seem to solve the issue so back at it again. Piston reset. But because the handbrake leaver was in its end position for releasing, (against the stopper) as per picture. I decided to adjust at the break leaver shortening the cable till there was space between the leaver on the caliper and the stopper which then seem to resolve the issue and the break. Now just to bleed. Thank you for the advices

Great news, glad you got it sorted

So just an update on this😪😪. Not a good one, but hoping someone would have a explanation. Someone replied to the post saying they cannot understand how this was happening. They were right. Next day, wanted to take the van for a spin again. Wheels locked. What the and some other words is all that came out. Hand break is released. So whent dack to check under the van. Cable and leaver still a bit tight, because they are new in suppose, but releasing. So this time before I remove the wheel I jack it and sure enough the wheel turns. Go and apply the hand break, wheel is locked, release, wheel turns. Same on both wheels. Go around the van to see if I maybe left any blocks in front of the wheels, but nothing. So what is holding the van. Out of desperation I jack the front wheel driver side. And sure as .. it is solid. Loosen the wheel, it would turn, tighten it would be solid. Appears because of the new pads the caliper has now moved outward to the rims direction more than the space allowed. Got a diffirent make of brake pads+-1mm thinner but still the same thing. When I press the wheel on and it goes against the caliper, there is +- 1.5 mm gap, for the nut to turn before it has secured the wheel. So that is it. Anyone who has come across this. There is not much to fitting the pads. Push piston in fit caliper, secure bolts. Watched +- a dozen videos, redone it about 5 times. The wheel size seems correct. I also used to diffirent makes of pads. Fahren and then boch. I only changed the pads, not the calipers🤔🤔😬😮‍💨

Wow, that is strange. They look like standard steel wheels so can not see the problem. Are the slides free on the caliper? Put your old pads back in and try it

Going to do that this afternoon, will then post a update. Sliders are free. Pins cleaned and lubricated. Thank you

Your wheel went on flat against the hub and not cocked over? Is the spigot rust free in the centre of the hub so the wheel goes on ok? Was it both front wheels?

What park is rubbing on the rim?
I have the standard 308mm disks with 16in steel wheels like you, and there is not a lot of clearance with new pads.

If it is flat against the hub, then jammed tight. Hoping i did not bend the rim. Spigot cleaned. Only front. Must check other side still, but from securing it, pretty sure. Will check that as well this afternoon. Will see this afternoon when fitting old pads, but never had a issue with the wheel going on, and had it of a couple of times

Is the brake caliper carrier bracket on backwards?

Not sure what you mean by backwards, but it whent on the way it came off. Believe me I looked at the option taken into account my intellectual ability. But by all the videos I have watched following them bit by bit, it seems correct. I will post a picture/video this afternoon just to be sure🤔🤔 🥵🥵

Maybe post the part number of the rims as well to confirm they are the correct rims for your van. Unlikely, but someone may have swapped them for another VW. Eg I tried some Amarok alloys on my van and they rubbed on the calipers

Thank you for that. Though of that yesterday morning, forgot about it yesterday afternoon🫣🫣, while busy there. Have to get the wheel of again this afternoon, will get it then

OK so just a update. With some pictures. Fitted the old pads, (outer only), and can now drive the van as the issue is overcome, yet not solved. Going to be buggers when these wear out. Please forgive all the pictures. Just did not want to leave anything out, as to get the best advice possible. What I also though of doing is go to vw and get a part number on the caliper. There should be a number on the unit itself, I believe, or if someone has a number, I can check that together with the wheel number. If anyone has these numbers availible, I would appreciate it

Lots of strange stuff.
Just OTOH..
-Are you sure you have a 2007 (seven) T6?
-Are you the first owner?
-Could you check against the Build Sheet if yours is a 17" chassis?
Those are not compatible with the 16" OEM rims. If you become VIP member you can get the build sheet for free , courtesy of Forum's Admin. You need to supply only your VIN.
