Questions on TSI Robustness and WAV Lifts

Hi all! Decided to finally commit to buying a T6 after years of being on the fence. My daily mileage doesn't justify a TDI so looking for a TSI Caravelle.

I am going to look at one this weekend but had some questions I was hoping to get some feedback on (had a search through the forum but couldn't see specifics on the below)

-TSI Robustness
The car has done 100,000 miles. It has a full VW service history but I'm wondering how close I am to major engine work. No details on the timing chain or water pump being serviced. Any thoughts?

-Wheelchair Lift
It comes with a Fiorella wheelchair lift connected to the rear (Fiorella Slim Fit F360/F360 EX Platform Lift - BAS) the dealer said they can remove it, but I am concerned about what modifications/reinforcements are carried out to the chassis and whether they can trap rot. The floor hasn't been dropped so shouldn't be that bad? Would be interesting to hear any experience on what mods are done?

Thanks All!

@Falcon300 as he has a TSi
Hopefully he can give you more input.
As with the wheelchair access these can be removed and put back to factory apart from maybe a few extra rivnut holes which can be plugged.

Rocking Horse poop those TSIs,

Popular with the boy racer brigade, as the petrol engines can be tuned up massively.

Not sure on the longevity of them as we don't see them much on here?

Maybe a good sign they are reliable?

Or just very rare?

Thanks 👍, I would be surprised there wouldn't be any additional reinforcement in the area. 300kg lift capacity and 150kg lift on a horrible cantilever doesn't look right!

Yeah it could just be that they are rare. See what people say!

I think as long as all the major service parts have been covered the TSi engine should be right for another 100,000

With that kind of mileage you would want piece of mind you have given it a big service, changed water pump, cam belt, etc etc

If it was used as a wheelchair vehicle would it have been driven hard?? Is it a dsg or manual.. like any motor look for all the wear signs

Some may argue that a diesel engine is more durable and longer lasting?

Some may say a diesel is better suited for heavy haulage and long runs with better fuel efficiency.

Everyone will say that a petrol is essential for short journeys...... All (modern eu6,) diesels will clog up if not driven for at least 1hr min time slots to allow regens to complete.

I've got a TSi, whereas I had some issues in the past with the steering rack needing replacing, along with the slave cylinder, new clutch and DFM wheel.
These issues were probably linked to how it was driven by the previous owner, mine has literally just hit 40k on the clock.

Apart from that, it drives faultless.
If my memory serves me correctly, the DFM would expect to get changed around the 80k mark, and whilst that is out, it would be prudent to get the clutch and slave cylinder done, as you know that sods law will dictate if you don't, something will go tits up and pear shaped.

@Dellmassive :

--Fixed that with you .--
Only of my last 3 cars (Renault + Mercedes) before I got cheated in the VW trap , 2 where E6 and one E5 Diesels . All with DPF and EGR of course.
NEVER EVER
looked after regens. What's that? Yeah, sometimes car exhaust smelled bad. 🙄That's all.
Never had to replace or or "clean" anything in the DPF/EGR system.
More than half million Km all together, one still running like a train.
This without considering the previous E3 and E4 (with EGR + DPF too). BTW Renault had EGR ( maybe not so named, but same recycling exhaust concept ) in my 1600 Diesel Express minivan in 1994.
Yes, I drive mostly long-ish streaks,
I get the services done when is due (but not before), but I just never had to care about or "monitor" the DPF. It was there, it worked, and that was it.
I SUSPECT this is a post-dieselgate knee-jerk reaction, that forced VW first to manufacture technically suboptimal diesels, then to stop that production at all.
Sadly, at least until E5 , but even more before Commol Rail, VW diesels were touted as the industry gold standard. Nothing better than them, just too expensive for me at the time.

Thanks everyone, I have had issues with later diesels and it's put me off for life!

I'll take a closer look at the service record, it's had 1 owner and it's the 150hp manual version if that means anything! I have an OBD11 reader I'll be plugging in to see why I find 🧐

I’ve had my TSI from new in 2018. It has now done 70k miles and I don’t see myself getting rid of it any time soon (unless I have to to make room for a Crafter). The water pump was changed at about 40k miles due to a leak and (apart from the 1st service interval) the oil and filter have been changed at about 10k miles (despite being on the extended service interval setting). Apart from the odd oil change, all servicing has been done by the dealer. It “feels” noticeably more refined than the diesel versions and takes me to the Austrian Alps at least once a year (twice this season). It has been remapped (to about 250bhp) and also runs an LPG conversion.

I have also fitted brackets for the Reimo Cate Carrier to the rear for carrying a motorbike. They may mount in a similar fashion to the Wheelchair lift? In my case, the brackets simply mount into the rear chassis legs and are bolted through the existing mounting holes in the chassis that are also used for a tow bar. The Cate Carrier is TÜV approved to carry 250kg on the T6, but remember this applies when driving whereas I would expect a wheelchair lift to only carry that weight when static and so the 300kg mentioned is probably in the same ball park. Anyway, to be clear, there was no other modification (other than 2 holes through the plastic bumper) to fit these brackets and no reinforcement of any sort, and so I wouldn’t be surprised if the same was true for the wheelchair lift.

Thankyou for taking the time to write this! Good to know!

As an update I committed and bought it today! It was a notability vehicle and has been serviced well with a lot of the big items ticked off in the last 40,000 miles. Dealer is removing the loft aswell so I don't have to struggle with that. Thanks all
