Quandry with rear differential oil change and Gear box fill level

Having done the gear box, front differential and Haldex (2nd time of doing the haldex) oil changes (more about the Gear box later) I came to doing the Rear Differential. Having located the fill and drain plugs (see photos) I removed the fill plug and then the drain plug but no oil came out. Surely there couldn't have not been oil in the Differential box. I've had the vehicle (T6, 4 motion, 2018) from new. So I started put oil in. As soon as I put some in , straight away it ran out. Perhaps I've got the wrong drain plug. Tried another possible one but proved not to be. Besides the drain plug bolt is quite distinctive. I removed the drain plug again and blew air up the drain hole and some oil did come out of the fill plug. The only good thing at the moment is that one may conclude there is oil in the Differential box and the oil looks to be in good condition (Va.n has done 56K) I've thought about asking VW (as opposed to my local gargae) to do the Differential oil change but they told me the oil and drain plug is £93 [(ok I can wear that (drain plug is £5)] Worst is even if job takes 15 mins they will charge an hours labout £120. If they charged pro rata I'd go for it and ask to watch. Anyone any thoughts on why no oil has come out assuming I undid the correct drain plug?

Gear box: after much searching I found the fill plug (hidden but plastic trim) Collected about 3 litre of oil. Although all my research says the volume of oil required is 2.7 litres I put 3 litres of fresh oil in. The Haynes manual for a front wheel drive says fill to overflowing. Thinking the level wouldn't be that far off overflowing I purchased another litre of oil and all of it was added without it overflowing. A friend of mine who is a retired Mechanical engineer and worked on engine development says fill it to overflowing. There should be a vent to relieve any pressure. If doing so is too much oil then the result will probably mean increased fuel consumption due to viscous drag and if completely overfill it it should dump oil. So to summerise: Literature statres 2,7 litres oil required. 3 litres emptied and 4 litres put back and still not coming out of the fill hole. Yes vehicle was level. Anyone any thoughts? Stick or add more?

Update. Apparently the bolt I removed maybe a locating bolt- oops. No wonder oil didn't come out. Hope nothing has been disturbed. In which case the drain bolt is not obvious.

If you are refering to the rear diff, many have a fill hole but no drain hole (although there is a area on the housing where a drain plug would be if it had one)
 
Hello Manfrotto, When I rang the VW van centre where I bought it from they told me the drain plug is £5 that was after giving my registration. So one must be present. I told him I didn't need a fill plug. So no confusion. Unless the drain plug is a 16cm hexagon headed bolt then there isn't a drain plug for it as I cannot see anything other than those. Apart from the two fill plugs and Haldex drain plug. I'm passing the van centre on Thursday so will call in to see what they look like, if they will show me without buying. For a £5 worth spending a fiver to give me a clue.

Hello Doncarlyon, that looks just as mine looks. I initially undid the bolt below the Differential fill plug (the one that is halfway up the casing) But that wasn't a drain plug. I've seen on some videos that the drain plug would be between the right and middle bottom bolts in the photo. Seems that it is a suck it out job. I'd like to see the type / dimentions of tubing for that job so I can make one.

Hope you put the correct grade of oil in your Haldex. Mind you I'm no oil expert but at worse might cause accelerated corrosion / wear but not failure if not left in too long. Regards Stephen
