Welcome!
My entirely personal advice would be
Get a long wheelbase
Write down what you need the van to do
Decide what things you must have that can’t be retrofitted
Look at many vans - don’t fall in love with the first one.

Welcome to the forum and good luck in your search for a van. My advice is take your time, try lots of vans, read lots on the forum. Understand and stick to a budget and make sure it is a realistic one.

Write down how you want to use the van (daily driver, van, day van, camper, people carrier….), what is important to you (aircon, 6 speed, ULEZ compliant….), what is a must, what you can do without, what can be retrofitted later if needed. Are you willing to do work yourself or must it be a finished article?

No 2 vans are the same and no 2 owners are the same. What is critical for one is an unnecessary expense for another.

Hello to all of you established VW enthusiasts.

This is my first foray into any kind of forum and it took me 20 minutes to work out how to post this.

Looking to get my first Transporter soon so any advice will be greatly accepted.

Thank you for reading
The first thing we need to know is why you're buying one?
Work van?
Family van - have you got half a dozen kids/dogs/wives?
Camper?
MTB wagon?
Just because you want one & want to get into "The Scene" (whatever that is)?

First and foremost, this ^^^^

Once you can describe a well-defined use case, then relevant advice and guidance can follow.

The reason for buying one is I have 2 x 70kg+ dogs that I feel guilty squeezing into our Ford Focus. Thought about a T***sit but couldn't deal with the rust. I will also be using the van for work purposes (I work in Fire Safety so just the travelling part) which involves trips to London so ULEZ is a must.

As a result of requiring the van for the dogs it will enable us to use the Tent & Camping gear that we accumulated before dog ownership. I also wish to get out fishing more so the van will enable this.

Just about to embark on an extension to the house so regular trips to the tip will hopefully save £££'s

No really worried about "The Scene" TBH. I have pretty sweet Motor Cycle too and have never really got into "The Scene" there either. There are too many Timmy Toppit's from Elevenerief that I don't have time for and can't be arsed with.

I'm hoping to see what owing the van brings and was told this was the best place for advice and a welcome to the "VW Community"

So nothing flash then, which broadens your choice. I'd be looking for a Panel Van without a bulkhead, preferably LWB. Engine & gearbox choice is down to preference, as is trim level. Ultimately it will all come down to budget. I can't see any point in going upmarket Kombi/Caravelle as this will just eat into your practical space. You can always add a pod & a couple of dog crates as and when. Tailgate would be a nice option unless you need to load with a forklift when it's in work mode.
