I understood warm CO and CO2 rise, so (at home) a gas alarm should be mounted at head height. Most gas alarms in vans also seem to be mounted at the top of a cabinet.

ps I have emailed Camping in the New Forest for their definition as we camped there last year and planned to return in the Autumn

CO (Carbon Monoxide, the really dangerous one) is virtually the same density as air. Any air movement will mix it, it doesn’t layer like CO2 which is denser than air and tends to sink to lower levels.

A 3 gas alarm would cover the other risks.

“The Rules” don’t seem to differentiate between gas and no gas. The ventilation requirements appear to be for all vehicles regardless.

Been there , done that with 'the forest sites' before , it was drop out vents and vented leisure batteries last time after the first deaths at Hollands wood in 2012 .
The other way around it is to throw a little tent out and tell them your sleeping in that not the van .
