Bought two year service plan in November.

Took in for first Service this morning:

£1670 - Front crank end oil flange leak - quoted me to repair and replace timing belt and water pump!
£307 - Engine mounting cracked (surely warranty)
£1000 - 4 cracked tyres (I have 4 spares)
£144 - to fix the android auto issue with the infotainment - because they won't give me access to the software to flash it and fix it.

I couldnt believe what I was hearing.

Do these prices seem reasonable? Last time I had to change timing belt was 30 years ago on a citroen zx and it was £250

Local garage will be getting that work. It's a van, not a ferrari. West Yorkshire - any recommendable garages?

2020, so your main warranty run out in 2023.

So your now bought a 2year plan... Assuming ALL-in?

Engine mount is covered under the warranty (,I had mine done)

Crank main oil seal is comon... But not covered under all in, no oil leaks are..... But that quote sounds high... The job needs to have the timing belt off anyway... And it only takes a few mins to do the bearings.... And the water pump is a few bolts...... Sounds like they rotted up this job as separates, but should have priced as combined as the labour work is the same.

Tyres should be good at 6yrs.... But won't be covered under warranty.

Radio issue, not sure that would be warranty?.

You can call the warranty dept to double check what the garage are claiming for.

But to be honest I'd call a different garage for a second price up.

had similar issues when I picked up a 2019 t6. privately with 1 year left of all in plan. Thought I would be fully covered but alas not really

re crank case oil seal - common issue not covered by warranty. I kicked off with vw customer care as full MD service history and known fault (the oild seal has been re-designed a few times but still weak apparently). eventually got 50% off good will getsure (for something they know is crap) so cost for all circa £800 with MD. priced up with local indy using OEM parts was about the same so went with MD as 2 year warranty

engine mount - had replaced but was told not under warranty. after speaking direct with waranty provider (VS financial services) they confirmed it was covered and go a refund later (about £150 as I recall)

infotainment - OEM unit developed a sparadic fault, unit shuts down or becomes un responsive requiring a manual re-boot. Problem was they need to witness it which by chance it did on way to MD so now waiting on replacement through warranty (units are about £2k) but none available atm and on back order guessing due to the amount that are failing.

hope this helps

I had my front crankshaft oil seal done in January 2025. I opted to have the timing belt and water pump changed, the total bill came to £1532.

Dropped in to see my local mechanic, hes been l9oking after all my cars for 15 years, I've usually got 3 ir 4 at any point in time.
His response was... HOW MUCH?

He's gonna have a look, but told me all trannies leak oil at the crankcase cos they are heavy breathers. He rarely recommends replacing the complex seal until the timing belt is due. He is probably going to suggest i ignore it. But if I am worried and insist, then a full fix, crankcase, timing belt water pump and belts will be less than £500.

It makes me angry that people will listen to what VW say, panic and pay them extortionate prices believing their car or van is imminently about to die and only VW can fix it. It's such bad practice. My mate goes to the dealers for wiper blades replacing. He won't let me do it for him...

Id find another spanner jockey.

They have an effective PCV system, and if that is faulty to the extent that it's blowing seals he should have spotted it and given you a price to fix it before it causes more damage. There are easy tests you can do at home to verity this.

The other danger is the timing belt becomes contaminated, which can be very bad ju ju indeed, and that can indeed cause an engine to die in extremis.

If you dont want to pay the dealer prices thats your business, but they werent bullshitting you about the potential for terminal engine grief if left. Sooner or later it needs sorting, and sooner before it causes more problems is a prudent approach.

Currently getting price for cam belt. Whilst at it asked for quote to include oil seal and aux belt, all in with water pump etc.

So far, indy, £1000, nice round number!
