Nailing down T6.1 model to buy - Van weights

Hi. New member here looking for advice about van weights. I’m looking to buy a panel van to convert. Based on my preferred model, the T28 would give me a payload of 772kg whereas the T30 would have a payload of 972kg. From your personal experience, is 772kg sufficient for a fully kitted out van including furniture, popup, solar panel, bike carrier plus 2 bikes etc and 3 adults? 772kg seems a lot but I’m guessing you can eat into that quite quickly. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Could be enough, but if turns out not to be, you can always up-plate - a relatively inexpensive paper exercise, with no physical mods required.

Welcome to the forum, btw. 👋

My T28 manual, fully fitted with kitchen, gas, bed, solar, pop top, big Swamper wheels, near full tank of fuel, full water tank and a packet of travel mints in the cup holder chimed in well under 2300kg.

As Bav advises, its about £200 to uprate the T28 if required and can go as high as 3.1 tonnes by just filling out the forms.

Thanks Bav. So basically I shouldn’t stress about it. Go for the T28. Take it down to my local weighbridge when fully loaded and up-plate if necessary. Nice one.

Only thing to add to that is the rear springs on the T28 aren't as beefy as the 32 because they're not expected to carry so much.

That being the case you might find a highly laden T28 sags at the rear like a truck drivers Y fronts. T32 rear springs are very easily sourced cheaply and are inexpensive to fit, or an easy DIY job. Alternatively Eibach do some excellent high capacity rear springs.

But otherwise you're golden.

T32 has a better front hub / suspension design when it comes to strength and durability. Plus better ARBs.

Just for balance, search the forum for T28 saggy back end, or similar terms. There are numerous examples of people having to uprate the rear suspension on t28's due to soft rears.
The enduring theme of conversions, is that you ALWAYS end up taking more cr4p with you than you initially planned, oh! and that you always spend more

Thanks for this extra advice Sasquatch

Will do Salty Spuds. And how true!

Had a t28 as our first van and it did sag big time with a fairly standard conversion. Ended up putting updated suspension on it and was good from there. New van is a t30, but was one of the last ones to roll out and when I took it to have air suspension fitted it turns out they’d fitted t32 suspension to it! So if you’re planning to buy a recent one it’s worth checking as may already have uprated springs!

Just be aware that if you go to a DVSA-run weigh station and your van is found to be overweight, you'll be required to jettison the excess weight before you'll be allowed to drive away.

The boys at the local tip did it for me.
