MEKEDE DUDU7 12+512GB for VW Transporter 2020 - Headunit Chat

Cheers Antony. A few of the bits you mentioned we’ve already been through.

We’ve already tried most of the obvious Android-side stuff, including assistant settings, default apps, permissions, and general setup. I have actually got Google Voice Assistant working, but getting Google Assistant to become the true default assistant is the bit that still isn’t quite right, especially with DUDU insisting on having its own built-in assistant in the mix.

We’ve even tried uninstalling/turning off the DUDU assistant side of it, but that doesn’t seem to solve it either properly.

As for the button side of it, from what I can see, the press-and-hold behaviour seems to be a factory unit thing rather than something the DUDU is currently interpreting properly. That’s exactly what I’ve suggested to Mekede, though. It looks to me like they just need to detect roughly a 3-second press and hold on the OK button via CAN and then trigger the correct function from that.

Custom startup screens are sorted as well, so that side of it is all doable, and we’ve already made our own.

To be fair, none of the issues I’ve come across so far looks hardware-related. It all seems to be software, firmware and CAN interpretation stuff, which is actually encouraging because in theory it means it should be fixable.

That’s also where this seems a step ahead of a lot of the Android units we’ve seen before. The forum support and manufacturer involvement does actually seem to make a difference.
I can kill the Dudu7 assistless for you, and default the Google. Just need a quick video call for that one once I'm back in blighty next week.

The factory usb plug connector that plugs in to back of the factory head unit is different to the dudu head unit so can't be used without some sort of an adapter. I've had to order aftermarket usbs.

I think there was someone on this forum that sells an adaptor maybe?
Oh you mean 6.1 retention. Yes, adapters out there.. but don't waste your Dudu7 C on them. Just fire an A into one of them and leave the other one with a decent wattage for charging capacity. Personally I switch out a 12v charger socket for 100w Usb C and QC3.0 A port adapter. Then do whatever with the 3 USB A tails coming out of the DUDU7 - accessories etc. lots to choose from!

Can you share a pic of what you have done? I think I understand but not 100%

Yeah I ditched the factory usb connectors and used the ones that came with the head unit, I think you can have 2 usb connectors but I had to use one for the dab tuner and the second one is for connecting a phone or memory sticks

How did you get the USB-C ports working? I’ve been meaning to get back to This but keep forgetting sounds like you’ve solved it. Please share and get us out of our misery.
It's a retention kit we found they're about £99

"we’ve also retained the factory USB-C ports and their illumination" How did you do this?
Sorry that may have been misleading. It's the factory location and they look and work like factory but you swap them out for a retention kit we found

All sorted and Google now works on the steering wheel voice button after a quick chat with Mekede.

Hi. @Holmless , I'm looking to buy DUDU7 and have T6.1, if I buy 10.3" screen do I need to buy anything elses to get it installed, will the screen fit in the place of old VW system or I need to look for one specially made for T6.1 models? Thanks

Not sure about the T6.1 but on my T6 i had to buy an adaptor to make it fit and it doesn't fit flush with the dash unless you get the 9 inch version. You're probs have to do the same on your T5.1
