Low fuel pressure, P0087 please help

Good afternoon,
1st time post, been a while since i've been on a forum!

My van, 2018 2.0 150bhp manual 6speed BMT euro 6
144k miles, no engine mods/ remap, totally standard dpf and adblue present and working as is should

I bought the van in September 2025,
Had the cambelt/waterpump/aux belt, tensioners etc full service done just after christmas.

Engine coil light flashing once in February, scanned and it was the Map sensor, removed and it had a bit of carbon on the sensor bit. cleaned off, no problem since.

Fitted a towbar in march in preparation for our easter caravan holiday. All ok apart from when nearly home (after about 50 miles) loss of power going up a hill and coil light flashing.
Read code, p0087 low fuel pressure, reset code, got home no problem.
Van drives fine, plenty of power when not towing.

so, this weekend just gone, towing on the way to Fineshades (lovely campsite btw) after about 15miles, up a hill, loss of power, coil light flashing again (P0087) reset code, carry on no problem for the remaining 20 miles.
Now, on the way home yesterday (very hot day), driving fine for 20odd miles, get to a hill, loss of power, coil light, P0087. reset code, go to accelerate, loss of power (P0087), again and again...
Manage to get home slowly.
Today, not towing, loads of power, no issues.

One thing to note is ever since i got the van there has been a noise, a bit like a squeel, a bit like a whine, like a high pitched noise (hard to explain) which didnt go away after all of the belts etc were done. ( the noise continues when the aux belt is removed)
I used a stethoscope and the noise appears to be the HPFP.
Can anyone please give me some advice on what further checks to make before i start spending money?
The first thought would be the pump, but at nearly £700 just for a pump ideally i need to know that could be the problem
Thanks in advance

Probably something like this (@mmi maybe could suggest some others):

VCDS > Select > 01-Engine > Adv. Meas. Values

Tick data items

IDE00182 Camshaft adaptation intake bank 1: phase position
IDE00347 Air mass: actual value:

IDE00407 Rail pressure regulation: status
IDE07742 Cylinder head: pressure sensor 3 bank 1: raw value
IDE07744 Particle filter: air pressure sensor 1 bank 1: raw value
IDE07818 Fuel high pressure sensor: actual value

Log
> filename > Start (the logging - IMPORTANT!!!)

Run this while you drive and then get the fault.

Stop (the logging), etc.

Do you know if the fuel filter has been replaced ?

Thank you, think I need to get vcds and start logging then!
Annoying thing is it only does it when towing, so replication of the fault will only happen when going on holiday, which isn't ideal as that's the only time I need it not to happen!

Fuel filter was changed at service time with
Bosch F026402220
Is it worth changing this or a different brand?
Thanks

From the synptoms it seems that when the engine is requesting high volume of fuel (up hill and towing trailer) the pump cannot supply suffiicient fuel, and therefore not able to keep enough pressure, hence asking about the filter in case it could be a bit blocked.
The one you have used looks like the correct part. How many miles since it was replaced? Normally replaced every 80,000 kilometers.
Running the logs will hopefully narrow down where the issue might be - Low pressure pump, high pressure pump, filter, pressure regulator etc.and avoid just throwing parts at it.

Thank you,
It's done around 2000 miles since the filter was done, so not much.
I lowered the fuel tank last November to fit the kombi seat brackets, was very careful not to disturb the lift pump wiring etc.
As I've mentioned the hpfp is noisy, is the pressure regulator the one that's attached to that or the one screwed into the fuel rail?
Also would the vcds copy from eBay be sufficient for running logs, or do I need to get the proper one?
Thanks for helping

If your pump is like this-

Unscrew the part marked in red and look for fine metal particles, if there is then it’s not great, been there had the t shirt.

Just a thought - If you just get a OBD bluetooth adaptor and a i-phone/android app you can watch the rail pressure (along with other engine parameters) Most people use it for monitoring the DPF regen status.

See this link I posted on how to set it up:

Thanks, while all the drama was happening we did start to watch the fuel pressure (using carista) but couldn't really concentrate properly,
I'm pretty sure it was reaching 38000 psi briefly before the loss of power loss, then was only at 20000 when limping along (on idle it is 4500 ISH)
Those figures are very loose though

This is a thread for testing the lift pump provided by @mmi a few years ago.
Another test you could do once you get VCDS (unless Carista can also do that test?)

A friend had very similar symptoms, albeit with a Hyundai tuscan or kia sorrento , I can't remember.
Anyway, it only ever faulted up when towing his caravan, the turbo gave up within weeks.

Is it this?

Is it this?
