Leisure Battery Charging On The Cheap?

A thought came to mind whilst reading other threads relating to leisure battery charging - we know due to the nature of our 'smart' vehicle charging system, a conventional split charge system will not allow full charge of the leisure battery as the float voltage of the vehicle battery is typically lower than the correct charge voltage of the leisure battery.

However used in conjunction with a roof mounted solar panel/charge controller, could it offer an option to getting the bulk battery charge in via the split charge system whilst driving about, then 'topping off' the battery using the solar? - I fully understand a solar setup is probably stretching the title word 'cheap' a bit.

Madness or genius?

Personally I'm not a massive user of my leisure setup, so the solar keep it topped up without any other additional need for charging, however perhaps given more frequent usage would this offer a viable option?

Depends on the weather I guess. We use our camper all year round, and solar will be a challenge in the UK in the winter.

You won't even get bulk from the van using a relay. You also risk damaging the leisure battery this way. Solar is virtually useless in winter months.
