Info for anyone fitting an aftermarket reversing camera

Morning!

I finally came round to testing my aftermarket reversing camera yesterday and found that it wont activate when the engine is running.
The feed has been taken from the reverse light, which seems to be standard practice (at least it was when I had my T5).
Oddly enough, the camera works fine when the key is at position 2 but cuts out shortly after starting the engine. I tested the reverse light feed last night and it seems to be kicking out around 12v when at position 2 and about 10-12v when the engine is running. Can't say I ever took my multimeter to the one on the T5 so couldn't say whether its something different with the T6 or if its just the different brand of camera.

Options at them moment are to either take a feed from my fuse box and power via a relay or just use a manual switch.

I'll be interested to hear if anyone else has installed an aftermarket cameras successfully.

Thanks,
Andy

What amps are needed for the camera? It's odd.

You mind need a relay and a permanent feed switched when you select reverse.

Do you have a link to the camera you fitted, does it take a permanent AND switched reverse feed ?

I have aftermarket camera fed from the switched 12v in the centre console 15a fuse for the wipers

Have the camera so it's active when the ignition is on because I have a California and can't see anything out the rear view mirror so have one of those LCD screens as a rear view mirror, works really well

Additionally, have split the video feed to the nav unit so when in reverse the image comes up there also

Advice.... Don't try to cut the rear tailgate, get a pro to do it... Square hole... Nightmare!

Have you connected this to the standard head unit or fitted your own screen . I want one on mine but the VW one isn't cheap .

i want to install an aftermarket camera. thanks

Hi, I ran a separate power feed to a relay and used the reverse signal to latch it. Let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks. Andy

@Andy Cody , I had the exact same problem. The solution was to run a new live feed from my leisure battery. The issue is the way the voltage pulsates (not sure if correct terminology) on the reverse light feed. I have a thread on here somewhere that explains it better

That looks like a voltage regulator, which would still be seen as additional load by the lighting ECU, but you could use just a switching FET same as one channel of a towbar bypass "relay" , so the camera is switched by the reversing light without loading it

To be honest I wouldnt even bother with a live feed, for the length of time you're reversing, I'd just use a Duracell PP3 battery switched by the reversing light via a FET - no noisy pos feed to filter, no wavey screen, no wires to run... :) and 5.8ghz RF for video, loads of small, cheap, reliable FPV stuff on Banggood etc, like combined camera & tx, combined screen & rx...

I use an Auto-Vox M1 reversing camera. It's hard wired into the rear left reversing light. Just where the loom enters the van. It's worked perfectly for last 6 months. No issues with it at all.

They're on Amazon for under 40 quid.
Just a thought. Are you definitely taking the feed from the supply wire. If I remember right, there are three wires going to the reverse bulb. I'm assuming one is for the bulb error circuit.

The reason why it works when the engine if off but interferes when it’s running is because the bulb failure system kicks in.

A relay will sort this issue, but if you are running a new headunit and camera, then there is no need to pick up the reverse feed as we can supply a plug and play interface to power the headunit, camera, reverse feed etc

Can you retrofit the reverse camera into the current headunit?

As typically they use to do a reverse camera for barn doors but they only do one for tailgates now on new orders. Always changing it.

We have supplied genuine cameras for the barn doors, it replaces the whole number plate light holder trim,

What headunit do you have, as some require a interface,

It’s not arrived yet but a T6, with the 6” multimedia screen and app connect.
