I’m a clueless fool

Yes, I’ve had two gearbox services on the car, costing around £600, but in the 10 years of ownership I can cope with the cost as the gearbox is a delight. Worth the money to me.
To you it's worth it.

To me, if I had to spend money in my late 70s on it, it wouldn't be.

You're right, I could still suffer painful problems with a regular box. Nevertheless, while theres no guarantee it's less likely and probably less expensive if it does occur, so I'll play every card in my deck and hope for the best.

That is a stunning van with every possible extra and air too.
Comfort dash, electric doors, heated seats etc etc.
The only issue is that it has the biturbo Cxeb engine which can fail spectacularly once it starts consuming oil.
On the other hand if you can get the VW all in warranty on it then you should be able to protect yourself against that should the worst happen.
If it was me and I liked it I’d buy it. I have a 204 biturbo Cxeb engine on 147k miles so premature engine failure isn’t a given, but something you should be aware of so you can mitigate risk.

You're not wrong about how nice the van is but it would have to be a 68 plate to qualify for the all in warranty. Fingers x'd it is.
