advice on potential van

Hi Folks,

had stopped looking for a van.... then spotted a nice Transit custom that popped up on FB over the wk end... and it got me back searching again !!

this Transporter looks decent spec/build for the money... its not the best advert in the world !! but it seems to have everything i'd potentially be after other than heated seats... and maybe an awning... given they have a drive away awning - i assume it has an awning bracket of sorts - so maybe that bit would be easy added.

any feedback on the general conversion/spec/build ?

Build spec looks ok, looks like a Dometic fridge, so decent in that respect. Looks like a diesel heater fitted too.
The advert doesn't give a huge amount of details regarding the service history of the van, can't see an awning rail on the van so probably secured using the storm straps, as you said though, this can be easily added.
Don't buy it on a whim, go look at few.

The badge on the furniture indicates that it’s a Denby conversion. Have a Search with ‘denby’ and you find other owners experiences good and bad.

Looks a decent spec. LWB, highline, DSG, ok miles, tidy looking interior.
As above divide it into two. Van and conversion. Both need to be good. Probably the van more so. So check the service history.
Worth a look though.

thanks lads.......

that's an interesting way to look at it as a 'split' between the van and conversion !

service history is partial at best... couple in the book early.. then nothing then from when it was converted ~2 years ago (and serviced) plus once by current owner, but zero evidence of belt/water pump nor DSG service.

bit strange... guy has it booked in for a service on 14th July......... I've offered to buy it as is, and get it properly serviced myself - so i know belt & water pump/DSG box etc are all serviced, but he said the best price as is is 31K (its advertised at 30,995)

van is actually on 89K miles (not a big deal) i suspect many of the photos are dated.

Tips to check conversion side of things....
Have a listen for any creeks when driving coming from the roof fitting frame, especially when going slow over uneven ground as the van can flex.
If you can hear something, grab hold of the frame just behind the seat belts. Does it flex easy ?
Put your head in every cupboard and look at all internal cables, fixtures and fittings.
Where are the fuses and are they labelled?
Check leisure battery for being secure and cables look neat and all fused.
Check externally around canvas. How does the silicone seal look ? Any rust in gutters ? Does the roof sit nice when closed.
Hope this helps

Main dealer servicing is recorded on a computer system and not in a physical book. Not sure how you’d enquire about it with VW but it could well have been serviced.
The Indy garage that did my last service was able to access all my VW history and also update the system with my service. I’m sure someone on here will know how you get a record of any work done by VW.

thanks guys..... we made some progress last night, and he is enquiring with his finance company as to how we can proceed with that..... part of the challenge on buying privately when someone has finance i guess... but not a big issue

Not an issue, very simple, you deal direct with VW. In my case I was suspicious and made sure via a few different means that I was actually talking with somebody from the VW Finance Dept.

I have a Denby converted camper and overall im happy with the conversion albeit mines quite different to yours. Ask if the pop top canvas has any tears from the pop top hinges, mines getting quite bad around that area. I've not really got any negatives other than that really although as @AJCConversions has mentioned, I do get creaks from the roof frame.

2019 conversion......
