I Am Itching To Ask .....

Shredder

It's a Beast
T6 Guru
..... what maybe the most ridiculously entertaining question ever in a room full of T6 owners .... but I'll risk it :cautious:

So, there are loads of pictures posted, for various reasons in various threads, of T6's (mostly the camping fraternity) 100's if not 1000's of miles away from home.

After such epic drives .... 'boom' .... the on location picture is posted ....... and the van looks like something out of a Gtechniq detailing advert  ..... yet nobody says a word about the lack of insect spatter and brake dust :speechless: .... not even @Tourershine :D

Is it just the accepted 'norm' that a full detailing kit should be packed by T6 owners going on holiday and that the van is washed on arrival as a minimum, and perhaps at intervals throughout the holiday as well??

Thats not a daft question at all.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but personally when you see pictures of my van on here, or anywhere else, it's always immaculate.
Why? Several reasons really. Firstly, if you're not aware, I own a business that specialises in getting the best out of Caravans and Motorhomes. We take something that's dull, patchy, tarnished and generally tired, and transform it back to it's factory condition, and better. My customers pay a lot of money for what we do, and because of this, they expect to see everything to do with our work looking perfect, be it myself and colleague in matching shirts, shorts, and even matching footwear, right down to our van. It's not unheard of, me pulling into a lay-by before a job, and going over my van there and then with a quick detailer. It might seem nuts, but this effort pays off for me, and my vehicles are often a talking point with my customers, and it's always noted by them.

As for holidays, trips, and general driving, it's the same. I have all my kit with me, and know how to make my van look great in a short time. As a general rule, wheels and glass are a good tip. If your wheels and glass look perfect, they will often make a vehicle look great in a picture. Brake dust is the bane of my life. If you've seen I've changed to the new banded 19's, the main reason for this is not aesthetics, that's just a bonus. The reason I've had to ditch nearly £3k worth of imported wheels is because I spend over an hour every single day the van is used cleaning them, often several hours when I jack up the van and remove each wheel to clean properly. They are hell to maintain, but look amazing when they are. The new 19's are a simple wipe round and within 5 minutes, all four wheels look perfect.

It's in my nature to be OCD with my van, or any vehicle I own. I love the results, and love the fact people appreciate the work involved. I know the best angles to take pictures, and my phone can hide fly spatter quite easily (trust me, it's there on some pictures) am I nuts? Yeah maybe, but the fact you picked out my name in your thread, as have several other members on here, some in jest, just means that all this effort leaves an impression, and that's all I ever want to do

This might seem another silly question but How do you clean a van in a lay-by without water or more importantly without a hose pipe ? This also goes for washing vans at shows or campsites.
I've always believed you need to hose/jet wash a vehicle first to get rid of the main dust & dirt otherwise it will scratch the paintwork. Now I'm not into detailing so my knowledge is very limited but how do you get round the pre wash issue ?

There's loads of quick detailers on the market, so basically a spray that you'd use with a microfibre cloth. I don't advise using these things unless there's certain factors in play. My van is well protect with several layers of wax at all times, and this helps not to damage anything with quick detailers, but the trick for me is brand new microfibre cloths at all times, and your initial wiping over cloth that you'd use with your detailer spray being slightly damp, so it's not dragging across your paint. Plus I wouldn't ever use this is the van was totally ditched.
In my opinion there's never a safe substitute for water, when cleaning a vehicle, but there are ways to get things looking great without water, and these quick detailers work great in these situations.

I'm the antithesis of @Tourershine, I wouldn't dream of cleaning my van while away, other than clearing a layer of dead insects from the windscreen so I can see. As far as I'm concerned, the dirtier the van is when I get back, the better time I've had. THEN I'll clean it

I'd swap hardwired traits in a heartbeat.

I think you'll find that most pictures on here get posted after the busses have had a good wash, they only stay clean for a few days at best when you are up close.

But photo's can be very flattering, mine has a thick layer of dust on it, it wouldn't show on a photo and from a distance it still looks very shiny, but up close and it makes my teeth itch as it's so dusty.

I'm quite fussy, but there isn't room when I go on a road trip for detailing products plus I'm resigned to knowing that my kids are going to trash the van inside and out when we camp.

Mines always covered in bug splatter. Give it a good clean before I go away and it’s bug splattered when I get there

Using a crappy phone camera tends to hide my swirly marks and filthy paintwork.

Yer definitely gets dirty, and nothing like her looking clean again.

I’m guilty of taking cleaning things.
Last trip away I had to call at Halfrauds for some supplies.

Same here, always got quick detailer and fastglass and dash cleaner and more microfibre cloths than you can poke a stick at
