Howdens insurance - any claim experiences?

You need to speak to the thatcham branch of Howdens, they are the camper specialists.
That’s the strange thing. I did. Called the right number and got all the right options and picked modified camost, but seems I ended up with someone in Birmingham.

I can’t see a broker ever swapping.
They can and they do.
Brokers, just like insurance companies, will always want to maximise profit.
And that ☝️ is why... though obviously they won't act on one person's say-so - they're has to be a pattern of behaviour that's hurting their business for them to act.

Hilarious call with Howdens this morning. Started with “we’ve got some very good news for you … we’ve managed to get you on with the underwriter we originally quoted with”. Yay! I think, so the quote should be close to 510 quid right? Wrong, 1100 quid. Ffs. So it looks like flux are the cheapest at double cost of my current van. Tbf it’s double the value so I suppose I shouldn’t be too surprised.

So far I’ve done:
Adrian flux - 850
Comfort - 1140
Brentacre - no quote
Howdens - 1040
Just Kampers - 1290
Caravan Guard - 810 but mandatory security post!
Performance direct - 2400
Caravanwise - 1650

Anyone I missed that is worth a call?

What annual mileage did you specify? Obviously, if that number accurately reflects your needs, then you don't have any wriggle-room, but if you've over-estimated 'just in case' then it might be worth knowing that I found Comfort's pricing to be massively sensitive to annual mileage. Just a thought.

6k, which is a lot lower than we had on current van but have since got a car for the Mrs. Wouldn’t want to go lower tbh

Two months?! The only write off we've ever had was wifes car when some weenis smacked into it while parked and that was barely a week before the cash was in her account. IIRC that was Hastings.

We were stationary waiting for blue light ambulance to zig zag up road …. Grandma plowed into back of in an X90 at 50 mph
I always thought claims where one vehicle careered into the back of another were usually pretty quick to deal with? Two months sounds way too long.

They kept upping the quote for fixing until it became untenable … so I guess juggling between all the parties and getting indepent engineer for full exam etc I think when there’s conversions involved all the add ons the indecision whether to write off etc .., anyhow I was pleased it didn’t drag
Btw only just got payout for whiplash etc as that went to court

Had high hopes for caravan guard as they asked a lot of very specific questions before referring to the underwriter (rsa in this case). 810 quid, inc a smaller excess and breakdown….. but stipulated I have to have a security post behind the van ffs. It would be pointless on our drive as ours links to next doors so if they were out the van can just be driven around it! Bloody ridiculous.

I've always used Howdens but you do have to deal directly with their Thatcham branch. Sometimes if the lines are busy you do get redirected so pick the times you call (I find early afternoon is often good). Always had great service and advice from them. I had mine insured to an agreed value throughout - just had to send in photographs at the initial quote and after 5 years - always agreed.

Latest list for prosperity and in case it helps anyone with an up to date list. I have one more hope - NFU were my last call and she gave me a 510 quote but I didn’t get the sense she knew what she was on about and if mods were not on her list she was lost. For example I said air suspension and she said “I’ve got air conditioning?” Lol.
So I’ve asked her to ensure the underwriter is aware and that they are listed. Will see if they then decline to quote or double the price! Better that than have them decline to pay out if the worst happens!

Adrian flux - 946 (but with v high 1.6k excess)
Comfort - 1140
Brentacre - no quote
Howdens - 1040
Just Kampers - 1290
Caravan Guard - 810 but mandatory security post!
Performance direct - 2400
Caravanwise - 1650
NFU - 864 (764 without protected NC)
Safeguard - 1000

NFU wins. 864 with protected and 764 without. Decent excesses. New for old up to 2 yrs old despite me being technically second owner as it was prereg (all the others wouldn’t do that). If I drop the miles down to 5k it goes down to 775/665 so that also seems to make a big dif.

That’s the longest I’ve spent getting insurance for a long time!
