Hole in engine casing?

Hi,

First time post.
Just crawled under my 2016 T6 as loosing coolant very slowly and wanted to see if I could spot where it was coming from before booking in to a garage and noticed a small hole by one of the bolts on the underneath of the engine / gearbox where I can see a cog.IMG_2970.webp
It looks like it’s meant to be there, and everything is running fine.
Just curious if it is normal as to me it seems odd.
Bear in mind I am not a mechanic and have all my work done in a garage, I’m a curious electrical engineer so feel free to have a good chuckle at my expense if I have just asked the most obvious thing in the world to someone who knows what they are looking at!

Its normal, i thought the same the first time i saw it on mine, not sure why they leave it so exposed like that
At least mine is a combi so gets an undertray, panel vans dont get that so its open to the elements a bit more !

All normal, loads of gearboxes like that.

Looking at the picture, your gearbox looks a little wet with oil though. Possibly your rear crankshaft oil seal starting to weep a little

Interesting to know that the undertray is a kombi feature. Feel a bit easier leaving it off when I take it up the road to the garage now.

Thank you. There is oil everywhere underneath and in the engine bay. Almost looks like something catastrophic happened once upon a time and it was never cleaned up nicely.

That window is normal, and a great way to get a bar on the flywheel is the starter motor gets jammed on...... We all in the old days at least.
