Help plz, at a festival (so don't need to drive anywhere for a few days) passenger seat belt not retracting or reeling out, any tricks? Got tools with me so may have to take things apart ...

24 plate Kombi.

Yes I do have a passenger by the way, who may have to get a train home if I can't sort this.

Pre tensioner thing, is that where the reel for the belt is or in the receiver where you plug the belt in?

Just a thought, I have second row belts still in the van, could I use one of those in the front if I can't get this belt working?

In Wales ...

Maybe it's parked on a slope....have you tried moving the van ?

Anything aftermarket screwed into the B pillar trims? Screws can snag the belt. Had this before in the past by a convertor.

You'll need an M10 multi spline bit to get the top bolt out, then trim tool off the plastics. Possibly just wedged with an unknown I'd have thought. You may actually be able to pry the plastics off but it's not ideal to do this as you may break trim.

I'm guessing it's a single passenger seat. obviously a bench they could sit in the middle. Assuming you only have back seat belts and no back seats. It may be that you can swap one for the front if it's compatible (not sure) looks like it has extra fixing elements

I'd imagine you'd have a fault come up when you disconnect the tensioner. Also the tensioner isn't something I'd want to fiddle with as they can potentially activate with a bang

I know you've got it working, but is the seatbelt height adjustable on the pillar? If so, and assuming it wasn't on the lowest setting you could try lowering it if it does it again. That allows some slack on the belt to retract into the reel and unlock the mechanism

Thanks, good idea, tried that, didn't work, there was loads of slack but it wasn't retracting or extending. Works now (took panel off and poked it) no idea what was wrong ...

You may need to have it replaced. I know that occasionally jam on if heavy braking has occurred and the weight has not been taken away from the belt, breath in sort of thing to release but maybe the ball-bearing or what ever they use these days was just jammed in place. Either way perhaps replacement is best for safety and a piece of mind.

Thanks, yeah I have no idea what the mechanism is. Will talk to VW about warranty if it doesn't again I guess. No emergency stops with passenger on board yet though the auto braking thing has triggered a couple of times with just me (driver) on board.
