Hello from a new member – Seeking advice on a high-mileage T6!

Hi everyone,

My wife and I are excited to finally be joining the VW campervan community! We're back in the market after a brief hiatus from camping. We bought our first camper, a 1993 Toyota Hiace 4x4 Japanese import, back in 2020 (a classic COVID purchase!). It served us well until last year, but with the kids grown and not keen on joining us anymore, we decided to take a break. Well, that break lasted less than nine months – we've missed it so much we're already itching for another van!

Our old Hiace was "okay for what we paid," but we naively didn't consider how tricky it would be to source parts for a 30-year-old Japanese import. Plus, 30-year-old metal rusts if you look at it funny, and with drum brakes, leaf springs, and no turbo, it was, shall we say, "glacially slow" and not exactly a joy to drive by today's standards. We used to eye up all the VWs on campsites, dreaming of easy parts, endless modification options, and being part of a proper community (the UK Hiace community is pretty much non-existent, though they're huge in the Southern Hemisphere!).

So, the hunt is on for our first VW campervan. We're primarily looking at a T5.1, T6, or potentially a T6.1 if the budget stretches. It absolutely has to be a LWB for our large (40kg!) Greyhound. Ideally, I'd love an automatic as they're just so much easier to drive. My research suggests the DSG gearboxes are generally reliable if serviced correctly – my Audi A4 auto has been religiously serviced and drives like new, so I'm optimistic!

T6 Highline with High Mileage – Cause for Concern?

I'm currently looking online at a 2018 T6 Highline, converted last year by Taylored Campervans. The conversion looks to be really good quality. It's a T30, 150BHP, LWB with DSG, tailgate, cruise control, front and rear sensors, reverse cam, and air con. All sounds great... until I saw the mileage: 194,000 miles!

It comes with lots of service history, though not all main dealer. I've only seen records for gearbox oil services at 46,493 miles (2019) and 142,492 miles (2022). Apart from that, it seems well looked after with nothing untoward on previous MoTs, just the usual advisories.

However, the major concern is that a significant amount of money has been thrown at it recently due to EGR and AdBlue issues. Part of me thinks this is a good thing as these common problem areas might now be sorted, but the other part worries that the van is nearing the end of its natural life. I know many people say these engines go on for years, but this recent history is making me hesitant.

Here's a breakdown of the recent work I've seen:

  • 12/2021 – 126k miles: Replaced EGR pipe and gaskets (£550)
  • 09/2023 – 182k miles: AdBlue module, EGR cooler and valve replaced (£1415, inc. service)
  • 05/2024 – 188k miles: Replaced NOX sensor (£750)
  • 11/2024 – 193k miles: Replaced EGR cooler (£1365)
  • 02/2025 – 194k miles: Replaced all glow plugs and carried out DPF regen (£825)
  • 03/2025 – 194k miles: Replaced AdBlue tank (£1250)
  • 07/2025 – 194k miles: Fit replacement drive shaft (£???? - haven't seen the invoice for this one yet).
That's over £6,000 spent on parts and labour (mostly for EGR and AdBlue issues, not including standard servicing costs).

Seeking Your Wisdom!

My main questions are:

  • Are T6s really this unreliable, and should I seriously consider a T5.1 to avoid potential AdBlue headaches?
  • Or could this particular van just be a "jinxed Friday afternoon build" that will continually drain my wallet?
  • Given that these specific, expensive components have recently been replaced, do you think I "should" be okay for a while?
Any insights or experiences you can share would be hugely appreciated! We're keen to get back on the road and make some new memories.

Thanks in advance!

T6 isn't especially unreliable by modern standards. This one's got 200k under its wheels and we dont really know how it's been treated.

T5 may or may not be a safer bet, but they dont drive as nicely and you may be opening up an age related can or worms instead.

You cant afford to be too clever with any of them. Better maintained, lower mileage, more youthful examples cost more for a very good reason.

I wouldn't go near a Transporter with 200k unless they were practically giving it away. Theres a good chance it'd work out far more expensive than just buying a better example to begin with.

Many thanks to you both for taking the time to reply.

We are budget constrained so the £28000 for this was in the ball park of where I hoped to be, but am unsure if it would be wiser to go for an older van (T5.1) which may be cheaper with less miles, or newer (T6) with more miles?

For the most part the van does have lots of service history (18 different invoices) documenting the standard servicing items, oil changes, cam belts, water pumps etc, all done at the correct intervals, but the lack of evidence of any more than 2 gearbox oil changes does worry me a bit.

Is £28000 too much money for the van with 194k miles?

I have attached the conversion invoice for info.

I have managed to contact the previous owner who sold it late last year and he said the following:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Yes we purchased the van from my wife’s step dad and had it converted.

Generally it was great, drives really well and very few mechanical issues or problems at MOT.

We started to have trouble with the adblu system and the van spent time off the road through a few rounds of trying to resolve issues. We had a few different issues accumulate and were concerned about costs. We also weren’t using the van as intended, too few long journeys and as a commuter vehicle.

We also have a young family and haven’t been too successful on attempted camping trips, otherwise we may have chosen to invest more in the vans maintenance.

I expect the VAG centre who bought from us will have done significant work on the adblu delivery system to resolve the issues we had but I couldn’t say for certain."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The invoices from the VAG centre that I have seen since the previous owner sold it to them are for a replacement AdBlue tank in March of this year, an EGR cooler in November 2024, and new glow plugs in February 2025, totalling over £3,500. It also appears to have just had a driveshaft fitted.

Any additional words of wisdon gratefully received and thanks again.

Going to give this van a miss.

Had further dialog with the previous owner and I had wrongly assumed the AdBlue work was fixed by the VAG center (Bristol) after he sold it to them. Actually all that work was done under his ownership and faults still persisted with him being quoted another £1k+ to rectify. In the end he gave up and sold it to them.

There is no record of any additional rectification work being completed so I have to assume there is still an underlying fault.

Decided I dont have deep enough pockets for T6's and their AdBlue issues so will stick with looking at T5.1s.

Kind regards

I think you made the right decision on that van because it's got a lot of potential for being a money pit, good work contacting the previous owner.
Having said that, there are a lot of T6's around with 100K plus that are trouble free, and some early T6's didn't have Adblue either.
Personally, I waited until I found a Euro 5 T6 as I didn't want Adblue, but for many people it is no problem at all.
Features such as side bars and wind deflectors aren't important IMO, and if they're important to you, you can add them to your van at a later date. Look for a good base van with the features that can't easily be changed that you want, everything else can be your choice when your budget allows.
Good Luck!

I’d be more concerned about buying a Taylored conversion. I got them to supply and fit an awning rail, pretty simple process with instructions and they still balls it up.

Oh, wow. That's not good. Maybe I had a lucky escape!

Only thing I would add to your considerations is a T6 will be Euro6 compliant, so no emission fees as opposed to an older T5, so no emission zone charges.

Some early T6's were Euro 5.
I have one, although I've never paid an emission zone charge or had to avoid anywhere.

True, 2016/7 maybe they all became Euro6. Emission zones are in effect in London, Bath,Bristol, Bradford,Portsmouth, Sheffield and more are in the pipeline. In Europe it's more extensive, to camp in central Berlin and Stockholm the vehicle has to be Euro6

It's a very valid point, and why I was originally looking at T6. I live inbetween Bristol and Bath and both have clean air zones. Our old Hiace was non-compliant so we just avoided driving through the cities, but as the next van will likely also have to be a daily driver, then a T6 might be a necessity.
