Hard to select gears (sometimes when cold)

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advise. I have a VWT5 (2014) 1.9. Every now any again, it is challenging to get it into a gear even if you pump the clutch and when starting from clod. As the engine warms up it generally improves and after a while the gears move freely. Also when this happens (and as you push down on the clutch) there is a slight whirling sound in 1st and 2nd gear. I have recently had the clutch and dual mass fly wheel changed and the gear box oil have been replaced and is at the correct level. I was wondering if anyone has has similar problems or might know what this might be? Thanks for anyones time considering / replying.

Did you use the genuine VW recommended gearbox oil? Some have used cheaper oil (same spec as VW) but have experienced difficulties in engaging gears. Apparently it might be something to do with the way the synchromesh works. I did a lot of research on this before changing the gearbox oil on mine and this came up as an issue.

Anybody able to help me with a similar issue…

We’re on holiday at the minute. Drove 2.5 hrs on varied roads - two thirds motorway so no gear changes then onto Welsh A roads and a couple of local roads before we parked the van up overnight. In the morning getting into reverse was a stiff and notchy, then couldn’t get into first to pull off until the van had sat idling for a few minutes. Most of the day - driving between the sights, it was fine. Smooth gear changes, normal clutch control at junctions etc.

Last stop of the day and we parked up for about an hour and a half… went to leave the car park and again - tricky selecting first gear again. Really stiff. But the drive back to base was fine, just that first selection of the journey was problematic.

I believe the clutch and brake fluid are shared? There is no warning sign for low brake fluid level and the brakes feel normal.

Any thoughts?

Meant to add - 2014 5 speed manual.
Had a new DMF, clutch and got them to do the gearbox oil too - approximately 30k miles ago. The DMF was noisy then, hence the work. It’s been golden since.

Not sure if this will help. But I recently had a new five speed box fitted and had the clutch and dual fly mass done at the same time. After all was fitted I had a similar issues but it was the gear selector. I had to switch the old one from the original box back to my refurbished one.

If you’ve had the gearbox off could the selector or associated cables/links be causing your issue between the gearbox and gearstick

If its tight going in gear with the engine running but not with the engine off, then it's clutch related. If its tight with engine off too, then it's linkage/adjustment/gearbox

Must admit I didn’t think to try it with the engine off at the time.
Sod’s Law - it’s been fine all day today.
Will see what tomorrow brings.

Not had any work on the gearbox, clutch etc recently but thanks for replying with ideas. Would be great to get to the bottom of it.

Looking like it needs some new discs soon so when it’s in for those I’ll get the garage to check it all over.

Fingers crossed it lasts this week at least.
