Fuel filter change?

According to google searches

"For Volkswagen T6 Transporters with diesel engines, the fuel filter replacement interval is typically every 40,000 miles or 60,000 kilometers"

My VW T6 102 campervan is a 68 plate (7 years old)

I only have 19,500 miles on the clock. I am servicing my VW T6 102 2.0 campervan myself soon. Should I change the fuel filter as well as oil/air filters and oil change?

I'd say it depends on how long you plan to keep the van? That filter may already 7 years old (no idea what servicing has been done in the past) and I have no idea how long they last before the fuel degrades it but if you plan to keep it for another 7 years then I'd be changing it myself . If it went in for a major service after 4 years it would be changed.

I’d say it’s minor service one year (oil and filter) and major the next - and that’s all the filters plus oil change. So I’d think the fuel filter would be getting changed every couple of years.

Or just fill the filter housing with diesel once the filter is in.

I would never buy parts from amazon unless it was a known outlet. Too many fakes on there.
 
Can someone give me advice on priming a new fuel filter please? When fitting the new fuel filter do I need to leave the filter outlet disconnected whilst priming the pump with my Carista until I see the diesel appear at the outlet? Will the pressure be too high and perhaps cause a spillage?...or do I just connect the two hoses and run the fuel pump...if so, how will I know it is fully primed and that any air has been pushed out.

No, everything needs to be connected properly to run air out from complete fuel system including HPFP and injectors.

Finally at 6 years VW agreed to replace fuel filter. VW garage tool ODIS uses the procedures below to bleed the new filter.

Fuel filter bleeding​

(1) Run the pump for 60 seconds:​

VCDS > Select > Engine > Basic Settings > IDE00459-Test of transfer fuel pump​

(2) followed by 30 seconds of cyclic run of the pump​

VCDS >Select > Engine > Output test > Fuel pump electronics​


That's all - start the engine - it starts up immediately - check for leaks :thumbsup:

When Priming the fuel pump on the T6 with an OBD2 interface (in my case I'm going to use Carista) do you run the tank lift pump with the high pressure pump side disconnected to fill filter first?
If you run the lift pump from the tank fill diesel in the filter with the engine side connected, how does any air in the fuel line get pushed out?
I am just concerned about residual air damaging the high pressure pump.
If I fill the new fuel filter manually, will any small amounts of air be purged somehow when I try to start engine?
Is it also possible to flood the engine/injectors with too much diesel in the case where the pump is run too long from the priming process?

Any small pockets of air will get pushed back to the tank or through the injectors and out the exhaust when you start it after the purge. The purge is to fill up the filter and its housing to keep air in the system to a minimum. Google common rail injection and you’ll get the idea.

Thanks. Just changed out the filter and about to buy a months sub to Carista to prime the the pump. I have already filled the fuel filter with diesel. Fingers crossed it all works. Will update later

Just primed the fuel filter with Carista . It ran for a minute and I could hear the lift pump running. Initially, a bit of gurgling but after a few seconds that stopped. It continually ran lift pump for a minute then stopped.

Started engine and it fired up. Went a short run and seems to be OK. Thanks to all who commented and helped.
