Front mud flap fitting.

Just thought I'd share some photos of the fitment of front mudflaps using a different method to those rubber bungs often used.

M6 Rivnuts and bolt.

Helps prevent the flapping that's often seen and is a more secure fit.

That is interesting, never thought of that! I suppose that they could be just riveted on also? I have not found the mudflaps useful in the least. I live off road ruts mud and stone etc on ruts they are always catching and sometimes the rears in part come away showing a weedy wood type screw that just seems blind no way to re-screw. in the mud it sprays everywhere anyway because they are not big enough wide or long and they are too stiff. Would prefer something like the old rally cars with long and wide but soft rubber held back with a bungee cord so that one can not run over them when reversing or could pull right back and out of the way. If I was specking a vehicle now, I would omit the mudflaps because they are totally useless and catch.

I like the idea of rivnuts in there but worry about trying to get those bolts back out after a few thousand miles of use .

Looks good. I like it.

The rubber bungs are a sacrificial part.

Ie, if the mud flap gets caught on something it will rip out the rubber bung versus ripping out the plastic under tray.

Saying that, I've had factory mud flaps for the last 10 years and never had one ripped out yet.

.

I agree that it’s a sacrificial part, the intention is for the fixing to fail if needed but when mine perished and I found the fixings weren’t available so ended up getting a cheap aftermarket set just for the new fixings! If it was fixed using rivnuts and it did get caught on something what would fail first?

Some very good suggestions for something often taken for granted until it becomes detached. Some of the suggestions might be a good preventive measure or just in case. Improvement by committee! :D:)

I have floppy front mudguards, the supplied fasteners is basically a square peg for a round hole that do not hold up. My Riv nut tool would require me to jack to van up about 3ft which is not feasible so I am trying these Well Nuts which is a rubber sleeve and a threaded brass insert. Will let you know how they hold up.

UPDATE: Fitted today and now very solid, needed a little shaving with a Stanley blade as went with the M5 sized but fit very snug in the hole, I over tightened the 1st attempt and pulled the brass nut through, but just need to pinch them up to the mud flaps are firmly fixed.
