Fresh meat

Hello there! Just signed up, hoping to get my 1st t6 camper shortly. 2019, low mileage. Driven several vans prior to buying. I thought my van was 102bhp, turns out it’s 84. Drove them back to back, and noticed no difference. I’m wondering if it’s been remapped? How do you know?

I doubt you would notice much difference between those 2 power levels to be honest.

Thanks! No noticeable difference between the 2vans. Drove a route which contains a fairly steep hill and both pulled up the hill in 5th gear no problem. I chose the younger van without knowing it was the lower power.

Is the 84 not a de-tuned 102 ?
Should be fairly easy a cheap to get a factory map back to 102. All the gubbins are the same

Not applicable from 84 to 102 id suggest as they're identical mechanically

Is it a T26 or T28?

If its a T26 with a full camper conversion, weight of you and all your kit may come into play

I balked at a T26 84 which had the full Leisuredrive conversion specifically for that reason

It’s a t26. I think I’ll leave it alone for now, but it sounds like a stage1 remap shouldn’t damage anything. I’m like a child waiting for Christmas at the minute!

I bought a T5 130bhp from VW, took it to get remapped (Pendle) turns out it had already been done, VW had no idea, 181bhp ... I was a bit miffed as I was looking for a bit more power!

Greetings and welcome.

FWIW I cant tell much difference between any of them.

No, a van is never going to be a particularly fast vehicle, whatever bhp it has. That’s not what they are designed or built for.

In my little 102 I can keep up with traffic and still overtake stuff at times. It can go well above the speed limit. It copes with all but the longest steepest hills without fiddling with the gearbox. I can happily use third in the 20mph zones (to be fair it tells me to shift up and, if the road is level, it will do 20 in fourth but I’m not one for labouring an engine with too low revs). It’s a full conversion too, not just an empty van.

In my mind it seems the bigger engines suffer more if used on too many short trips too. Guess they are more complicated and have better cooling along with the fact they’ll be shoving more waste down the exhaust into the DPF etc.

Don’t buy a van that’s been sat on driveway or in a garage 50 weeks of the year.

My T5.1 is 84bhp and my T6 a 102 mapped to 160bhp.
The difference in the 2 is incredible.
The T5 I’ve to change gear at 3000rpm as in ringing its neck above that and doesn’t go any faster. It dies on big hills
The T6 is just coming to life at 3000rpm and pulls hard to 4000rpm sits at 70mph and still pulls hard if you floor it. Even on hills

I would look to up plate it from a t26 to a t3x (whatever you can get it to without changing components usually 3+ tons) as this could be an issue for a camper. I have a 102 and I would t bother getting more power but I would love a 6th gear!

Thanks everyone for your input. I’m glad I signed up for this! Lots of different views but everyone seems to love their campers! When I get mine, I’ll leave it be until I’ve got enough miles up on it to form an opinion. It’ll be used daily as well as trips away.

That's interesting, mine is 84 and got a customer with 102 camper and when I drive that it feels pretty much the same as mine. I just thought it was in my head
