Fitting refurbished steering rack issues

Hey,

New pump installed meticulously!!!! Followed every instruction to a tee....

Van is still making the noise and vibrating when turning on the spot.

Is there anything else it could be?

When it's jacked up it's quiet and smooth when steering lock to lock

Thanks

Why did you change the Hp Hose? Could it be the rack?

A new pump started all my issues off.

December 24, Leaking Pump - Fixed.
January 25, Rack started to leak post new Pump.
Feb 25, New Rack(s) and Pump(s) after my mechanic issues.
Marc 25, 3rd Pump and 2nd rack installed my me and no issues.

It got snagged on the drive belt when reversing off my drive. It was running for no more than 2 min. Steering went hard and I drove back onto the drive. The steering was faultless before. Could the loss of steering fluid damage the rack for such a brief time?

I really don’t know if it can or can’t. I just know the pumps really don’t do well if they’ve lost fluid.

I’m sure someone more qualified on here can answer that.

Thanks for the reply,

This wasn't happening before, it's only started once the hp line was replaced. Can the top mounts go bad if the van is jacked up for a few days? Thanks
Generally if you've done everything else, that's all logically left that can cause those symptoms. However, I see others are concerned the rack/pump might be damaged due to lack of fluid and that's worth investigating.

Just monitoring the steering rack, is it supposed to move even though it is bolted to the subframe? When approaching full lock, It's moves say 3 to 5mm to the side. Is that what the bushes allow for?

Thanks

Small update for anyone that commented.

Last week I spoke to Western Power Steering and they said it would be the pump. So I ordered a Bilstein replacement pump and the garage fitted it today. It worked for a couple of minutes and the then lost steering.

So I’ve got wait for a call from Western Power Steering tomorrow to discuss what has happened and hopefully get a replacement sent out. If this doesn’t work I’m at a total loss as it’s just a basic PAS system.

I’m getting temped to get the van back and having a go over a weekend with new parts in the garage.
Never use this company, full stop! Ordered their gold version rack and replaced the pump after as the system was drawing air. Long story short tested the Rack and can’t hold vaccum, at all and new pump is screaming! Called them and they don’t care. I’ll be starting a court claim

Hi
I read this trail as I experience issue with low steering power on my T6 after replace steering rack due to leakage. I purchased refurbished steering rack from WPS . I spoke with my friend mechanic( who assist me with replacement steering rack and the system was bleed when the engine was running. I will follow comment about bleed the system without engine running. I hope this will sort the issue. :-)

Quick update, problem still exist and I think next step is to purchase ticket for the gym to operate steering wheel :-(
I contact this morning with WTS asking instruction how to bleed or examine system after retrofit steering rack. Hopefully they will send information shortly.

Some advice they gave was to ‘blip/ rev’ the throttle and that can sometimes free over a non return valve. After the garage gave up on mine I followed this advice and it freed the steering off….the pump by this point was knackered, so we changed the pump and it was all good.

Apologies I am not mechanic, Can you expand ‘blip/ rev’ the throttle. Do you mean accelerate the engine?

Quick update.
Change rev help for 3 turns only and ... no more success. I order today new pump manufactured by Hitachi part number 2503632.
Hopefully the pump will resolve the issue.

It’s a vane pump, running it dry will knacker it in a very short time as will dirt.
It needs priming prior to installing, this should be in the instructions with the pump.
The PS pump reservoir has a fixed strainer that collects large debris in the oil that’s returned to the reservoir. It’s not a filter.
Some people fit filters in the return line, I’d be wary of creating excessive back pressure especially if the filter clogs.
So if a pump or rack craps itself and dumps debris in the fluid it needs flushing out or the contaminants will continue to cause damage as with any hydraulic system.

Changing the PS fluid is easy and cheap but not part of the VW maintenance schedule, worth doing say every 30-40K miles.
