Fire extinguisher

Just a thought… do people that have fitted lithium leisure batteries have the right type of extinguisher? Something that might be overlooked when swapping the battery.

The Staysafe All in one seems to be appropriate but the Fire Safety Stick says not suitable.
There ain't nowt you can do as the chemical reaction creates its own oxygen. Chuck it in a canal it'll burn underwater.

As Spuds correctly observes; if a Lithium battery goes up don't inch towards it - Yard away from it.

I knew lithium fires were a bit pokey but saw some extinguishers mention they are suitable and others specify they are not.

I’ve since had a quick look at some videos and yeah - run. They can be put out but you need a big extinguisher with a misting head and full PPE.

Seeing peoples trouser pockets explode in a shower of sparks was eye opening.

When I charge my jump starter/tyre compressor I have it in a LiPo charging bag that is fireproof. I guess there wouldn’t be room to fit a bag like this (they’re available in a huge range of sizes) around a large leisure battery under the drivers seat?

Lithium leisure batteries are LiFePO4, a different chemistry to phones, scooters, ebike batteries etc.

While they can fail and vent fumes, they don't produce their own oxygen, and the temperature they reach is lower than other lithium batteries, so thermal runaway is unlikely.

But still a good idea to get out and call the FRS.

Fire Safety Stick in a net pocket on the back of the passenger seat base. Easy to reach while exiting the van and long lasting.

I also have an oldish Stay Safe bottle that I had before the FSS that fits in the drivers seat base side pocket so I’ve just left it there.

Having tried to put out someone’s burning Chinese HID headlight with a large workplace extinguisher and failing I’ll probably be running away from anything but the smallest fire!

Kind of linked but thrash me soundly 💪👊🤛👋if I should have started a new thread…

Do people have smoke alarms in the sleeping area?

Not smoke, but CO alarm over the hob, which is also close to the Webasto outlet, so covers both.

We use a CO2 alarm too (never gone off in anger) but I think I ought to look at a smoke alarm or maybe a combined CO2 and smoke.
It’s a no brainer in the house so I’m not sure why I treat the van differently on reflection.

CO not CO2
CO = Carbon Monoxide, “The Silent Killer”, produced by incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, Gas/petrol/diesel etc.
CO2= Carbon Dioxide, produced by human respiration, and many other chemical reactions. It’s the Fizz in beer & drinks. Not toxic but can suffocate if in sufficient quantities, highly unlikely in normal situations.

Good spot, I meant the carbon monoxide alarm.
Thanks

I have a small silver one which is now actually pasted it’s BBE date but I can’t find another silver one and red just won’t go with the decor
I have this one Amazon.co.uk
Never got round to mounting it properly, as I'm scared of drilling holes in the van! Have it wedged in by the jack, which is probably a really useless place for it

We have smoke and CO alarms in the van.

Optical smoke alarm near hob, x2 CO alarms, one under hob cupboard and one in main sleeping area, x2 fire safety sticks, one at the rear and one in drivers door, note to self, I keep meaning to buy a fire blanket,IMG_4617.webp

These.....

Not one to be outdone I’m putting in an order for one of these…

I carry one of these in all my cars, suitable for all types of fire including lithium.

Having used a powder extinguisher a few times, whilst yes it saves your pride and joy, you will spend the next few years trying to clear up the mess it makes.

It’s gonna be one of those I get, multiple recommendations now. I am a little worried it’s bigger than our current one though
