Factory diesel heater question

I have a question about the facory diesel heater in my ‘24 T6.1 150.

I always thought you’d have either a Webasto unit or an Eberspacher. But these original labels on the door puzzle me a bit. Anyone who can shed some light on this? 😳

Thanks!

Webasto is your coolant heater, Eberspacher is your air heater.

The Eberspacher is an interesting one - it is an M2 D4A - the M2 range are all 4Kw but yours is labelled as a 3.5Kw. Must be a special de-rated one for VW OEM. First time that I have seen one of them - it isn't in any of the manuals that I have, although I don't keep up to date with Eberspacher like I do with Webasto.

Oh… that’s interesting. I only ordered a heater for the camper part AFAIK. I wasn’t aware both heaters come together. 😳

Back to the manual to figure out how the coolant heater works! 🤪

Thanks!

They don’t come together. The coolant heater is standard in some countries. It’s controlled by the van.

Thank you @Deaky. Do you perhaps know where I can find some info on how / when it works etc? I can’t seem to find anything about it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

It will come on when you first start the engine to help bring the engine up to temperature quickly.

Thanks again @Deaky - very helpful!

I must admit I've never noticed any pre-heating going on or that the engine warms up noticeably quick(er) but then, I have no comparison as this my first VW van.

I have only ever noticed the pre-heater working at 4Deg C and below. Mine when firing does heat everything up nicely far faster. The heater blower clears the windscreen from cold super fast comparatively to when the temp is only just a little higher and no pre-heater operation. I believe that they can be arranged to operate at other temps sure there is a post somewhere. I understand that they can be supported by a remote key for preheating the vehicle from a short distance?

So our van is a T6.1 uk spec panel van.
If I go to the top of Sweden in winter, which can often get down into -20 -30 and start the engine after a night of it being switched off, will it start ok, I thought I needed a extra coolant heater fitted into the system?
I would obviously have changed coolant and engine oil etc to cope with extreme low temperature.
I’ve seen videos where people going to the artic turn on a switch to heat up the coolant before turning over the engine?,

Yes, no problem.
I see your in Finland, so a uk spec van is the same as one used out in the Nordic countries, we potentially are planning a road trip almost to the top of Sweden (Lulea) in the middle of February, so apart from decent winter tyres and changing out the coolant and engine oil, screen wash, we should be good to go, no other pre heat timers needed?

Yes, by statistics February is the coldest month.
Coolant should be fine as it is but certainly worth to verify the actual freezing point. The engine oil used over here is Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 (year around) which is "liquid" enough even at extreme coldness. I don't expect any issues with starting the engine. However, warming things up might take some time. To help the warming issue nose covers are commonly used - see below

Does your engine have bottom tray? It's another useful thing to have - just to keep things a bit warmer.

Oh, don't try to reach cold areas with diesel brought from south. The quality of diesel sold in north is different. Anyways, T6/T6.1 have fuel heater so not a problem when engine is running.

The AdBlue freezes at -11C, nothing to worry as such. However, might be a good idea to keep tank only half full to avoid damage because of freezing (expanding).
Even though can't really use wipers to wash windscreen, it's still good to have proper washer fluid.

Also, the DPF regeneration can be literally SEEN in the cold - a huge white steam trail following you - quite impressive :inlove:

Of course if you would permanantly stay up here, a coolant heater would be a good/comfortable.
