ESC warning light - Inaccessible?

Hi all,

Recently changed my clockspring on my T6 and it popped up with a ESC warning light and also comes up with a start/stop error when I press the auto start/bottom. Headlight flash works fine.

Plugged it in to my AnyScan and comes up as "ECU response error" when I'm trying to reset the steering angle sensor (which is showing a fault).

When I try to cancel the fault completely (without recalibrating the angle sensor) it comes up as "Inaccessible".

Had a look at the following thread -
Help Please! but there's nothing to suggest what the fault was in the end.

To complicate things the MOT is due next week. So a few questions -

Is the steering angle sensor separate to the clock spring?

It's an ex-RAC van, is this likely to complicate things with the electrics?

Noted Paully's advice about the CANBUS but I'm unsure how to check this to be honest.

I've checked the possible fuses and both seem OK.

Any help would be great, the van needs to stay on the road if possible and an MOT failure for a warning light would be less than ideal.

Thanks,

Andy

ABS/ESC & start stop errors are normal if theres an issue with the steering angle sensor or its out of alignment

Not familiar with the interface you are using but you may need a proper tool to go into it and/or recalibrate if necessary, VCDS would be the default but not cheap for a one off job

It's all integrated into one unit.

Did you try to go for a short drive(slowly) and rotate your steering wheel all the way left and then all the way right?

Thanks both. I replaced the original with an aftermarket clock spring. I've just called the seller and they've said the part I have is just the clock spring, not steering angle sensor. His suggestion was to transfer the steering angle sensor from the old clock spring to the new one.

Is this actually possible?

Photos of old and new sensor attached.

So it is, thanks for your help. Just need to figure out how to get this into the replacement and it should be sorted. I'll update how I get on.

is your scan tool capable of reading the angle sensor ?
Is it capable of basic settings on the angle sensor ?

If it can read it then before putting it all back together adjust the ring to get the value as close to 0 degrees as possible then you shouldn’t have to calibrate it after fitting

OK so turns out that the clock spring I bought isn't able to take the steering angle sensor, they just won't fit together.

So does anyone have any recommendations of anywhere to get a more genuine replacement, new or second hand. VW want £318, and there are a few on eBay but they won't arrive for weeks.
