Engine noise query

Hello recently on a few short trips we've noticed that when we come to park up and switch the engine off, it sounds like a fan or something is still running for a good 30 secs to a minute or so. We've driven up and back from the Peaks last week and no issues but today the same thing happened with a short trip into town and back. I'm not very mechanically minded so thought I'd ask here for advice before I ring the VW garage. It's a bit disconcerting as not sure what it is. Thank you in advance for any support. Jules x

Electric fan, no need to worry, it's perfectly normal, your van might have been carrying out a DPF regen.

Thank you Dave for responding so quickly. It's done it about 3 - 4 times over the last 5 weeks so is that normal?

It can be, if you do a short journey and the vehicle can't complete the DPF regeneration process the fan will run on after you switch the engine off, if you repeatedly do short journeys the regen won't complete until you do a longer journey.
As with all modern diesels they don't like lots of short journey use, if it's in daily use make sure you give it a decent run once a week to keep it happy.
There's lots of info on here about DPF's and the regeneration process.

WOW! This is SO helpful Dave and I completely get it! (I've googled the DPF regeneration process and will read on here too!). Will ensure I take it out for longer runs in between work stuff! Thank you SO much, have a lovely day. Jules x

You should notice that the van idles (ticks over) at 1000rpm instead of the usual 800ish while it is performing a regen.
If it’s doing this when you are nearing home then give it a blast until the regen is completed. Might need an extra few miles, but it will save further complications from continual incomplete regens.

Thank you so much - it's great to have a visual to understand whats happening! J x

There is an aftermarket device available, it’s been discussed on the Forum before.
I tend to have a reasonable idea by watching for an elevated oil temp’ for the driving / ambient conditions.
