Dometic CombiCool ACX3 40G box discontinued, what alternatives?

As the title suggests, I was recommended a Dometic CombiCool ACX3 40G Mobile absorption cool box, 41 l (gas cartridge use) to suit my needs

I’m looking for something flexible where I can use electricity or gas to power the unit and something that is top loading as it will be used in and outside of the van

Any ideas guys?

Back in our tent camping days, we had an absorption cool box, a Go Outdoors special. 240/12/gas. It was a great bit of kit. It used to chew through 12V it got coldest when on gas. You have to bear in mind that Absorption fridges of any flavour can only chill down to Xdeg below ambient, they aren’t like a compressor fridge that will maintain a temperature regardless of the ambient temp.
So I’d have a look at Go Oudoors.

Go outdoors don’t have them, but bizarrely B&Q have them online. It’s a Quest, which IIRC ours was. They chill down to 20deg below ambient. So if it’s 30deg outside, they’ll get down to 10deg.

Fridges & Cold Beer -- How I Done It --


For Most Beer Lovers, Cold Beer is a Must. (especially Larger)

and for Her-Indoors a cold wine or G&T will always help smooth the situation . . . . maybe even Cold POP for the kids (My nanas term)

Then there is the necessities of camping and Fridges like Milk, Bacon, Sausages, Cheese & Salad(for the Burger).

Sure you could live on tins of Spam and tinned Tuna, but who wants to do that?



So this Thread is about just that, Fridges and cooling.

I've done loads of content that is spread about over various threads, so i though i was time...

I’m open to suggestions so will take a look

The fact that as mentioned above an absorption unit only gets 15-20c cooler than the ambient temp steers me this way

Compressor fridge is the way to go, but I assumed you had a requirement to be able to run on gas. If you don’t need the gas, then there are much better options available.

Having done more research I can run a compressor fridge from my Ecoflow connected to a solar panel so that negates the need to gas
