Car Play Sound Quality

Hi,

When using the phone facility on car play apparently I sound underwater to whoever is on the other end of the connection. If I revert back to regular Bluetooth sound quality is fine.

I’ve changed cables and updated the operating system, still the same.
Mentioned it to the dealership and they said it’s an Apple problem not VW. Not sure if this is a fob off or not.

Anyone else experiencing this or any fixes appreciated.

Cheers.

Not having car play, but in general a few things that come to my mind.

Did you check that the phone hands over microphone to the car instead of still using just phone’s own microphone? You could verify this by tapping your phone during a call, or just placing the phone further away.

When using Bluetooth the media unit definitely takes full control of voice processing including road noise cancellation and echo cancellation (of the voice from other end back to the other end). In my opinion both work amazingly well. The van uses the phone solely as a transmitter/receiver.

Unfortunately I don’t have car play so can’t confirm if the above is true then. A possibility could be that the above mentioned noise and echo cancellation functions are then handled by the phone, and the van just hands over microphone and speaker as such.

Might be useful to know which media unit you have as they are not the same – at least what comes to how they handle phones using Bluetooth connection.

Thanks for the reply. The unit is the OEM, not sure what brand tbh and the microphone is definitely the cars, I'm gonna talk with Apple and see what they say if anything. But the Car Play in phone mode is pretty much useless as it is.

I’ve got CarPlay and an iPhone X, sound quality is fine as far as I know, I’ve not had anybody tell me otherwise.

I've got exactly the same problem with mine when I connect my phone via CarPlay. Never had a problem for the first 6 mths (only bought the van in September), then all of a sudden nobody can hear me properly. No problem when connected thru Bluetooth. Tried different leads, even tried different phones, still no change. Hopefully someone has a solution, bcoz it’s a pain having to disconnect from CarPlay when a call comes thru.

Update on the CarPlay sound quality. I’ve just been told by VW that the problem is caused by the latest IOS update 11.3.1. They told me they will have a look at my next service (26/6) to see if there’s any updates they can apply to deal with the problem. Will keep you posted.

11.4 is the latest update, might be worth trying that?

Quick update.

Upgraded to an iPhone 8 and problem sorted, looks like it was the iPhone 7 causing the issue.

Thanks for the help.
