Buying A T6 Is 4 Motion Worth The Extra ?

In the process of buy a new T6 dsg and thinking getting 4 motion is it worth the extra or should I be spending it on customisation ?

If buying again I’d definitely consider 4 motion just to give me a bit more confidence driving across and pitching in muddy fields - that said, so far my 2wd has not let me down yet.

Had 4M on the last van.... but never used it in anger on rough muddy ground.

Worked very well in the snow and ice though.

But did have issues with the rear diff.. haldex unit leaking oil.... ended up costing £1500 for a new one with 50% good will from vw.

Then the new one started leaking too....

Final fix was a new rubber seal @ £25.... very annoyed..

It does add weight.... and you loose some mpg with it.. and more stuff to break or go wrong...

But having said that I would have it again...

Problem is we wanted a sportline and 4M was not an option....so I haven't got it... just DSG.

Now i miss the power delivery that was so smooth with DSG + 4M.

204ps DSG just lights up the front tyres with loads of tourqe steer. ... never had that with DSG + 4M.

So kinda personal preference and driving style I would say. If your happy with front wheel drive, are not a speed freak, and don't go on rough ground much then spend the cash else where.

Just my personal experience with it.

Can't be without 4motion.
But then again I pull trailers across muddy fields and live where we have to have 4wd in the winter to get home.
Be aware though, mine with standard Contis the van came with was as good as useless in the snow, wouldn't even pull me off the level drive. Put some ATs on and it's a totally different truck.
Would I have 4motion if I didn't HAVE to have it, no.
A 2wd with a good set of winters is better than 4wd with standard road tyres. A 2wd with winters is nothing compared to 4wd with ATs.
The challenge is where I live in the snow if you want to test the theory this winter.

If you do go 4-Mo then as above, get the diff lock, very annoyed that I went 4-Mo but wasn't told about the diff lock option so didn't get it.

Couple of times in the winter I couldn’t tow my caravan across a field so would defo loved 4 motion

My last two vans have been 4motion, I wouldn't go back to 2wd now. I live in rural Scotland and during winter have to tackle some pretty rough roads snow ,a lot of ice etc. I also have to drive a cross fields and farm tracks etc so 4motion is an advantage. 2wd with a good set of winter or all season tyres is very capable though.
I've tried all terrain tyres but took them off after 1000 miles. Great on snow and mud, but on an icy road they were treacherous. Turned my van into a 2 ton ice skate! All seasons for me make the most sense, they work well in all conditions and can more than handle muddy conditions with 4motion and Diff lock.

Would have liked a 4motion should have gone for one, especially coming from a Golf R to the caravelle, however it was not available on the special edition Gen 6, and got a great deal when I puchased it. Also spent way too much money on adding bits to it to even consider changing it now.

4 Motion will have limited space for an underslung water tank if you want to convert to a camper.
