Broken Ashtray Lid

My daughter has managed to break the press down lid on the ashtray on our T6 Caravelle.
When I say break the lid is intact but has to be forced open and will not close properly, its like she has broken the spring or mechanism that you push down to open and close it.
Any ideas on how to fix ?

Not sure if you can take the lid off. The unit itself is quite easy to remove. From memory there is a screw in the back of the tray and the rest is just clipped on. There is a thread on here somewhere showing how its done. Have a look through the comfort dash threads. Search comfort dash. Also, it slides over the DSG gear knob. Don't make the mistake i did of trying to remove the gear knob. I'm sure someone with more recent knowledge will be along to offer advise. @BiTurbo @Fish @andythom188

Might just be a case of playing with it. See if you can set it right.

Still trying but it wont reset itself. I think the spring has been bent backwards

Here is the tread I followed to change mine and it was simple. nics-centre-console-swap.4603
My advice is take it off and see if you can relocate the spring. bear in mind what i said about the boot, it does not slide over the gear stick. You release the left side of the dsg stick. Use a trim tool and it just unclips the rest is in the thread.
If you're stuck I have a spare centre console for the comfort dash. just the top section which is the bit you need. I'll sell it to you if you're stuck it owes me £ 50 +£10 p&p but try the fix first.

Nothing from VW I looked it up when this thread started and that piece comes complete with no breakdown of parts on it unfortunately

What cost is the new part? Don't want to be over charging for a secondhand unit.

I should just add that mine is a matt finish, not the gloss.

It’s annoying that it won’t close properly but something I can live with.
I’m going to fiddle around with it and see if I can work the spring back into shape. Will keep you updated if I manage to sort it.
