Hi, Does anybody know where in the UK I can buy a Bosch 14v 250Amp alternator? Part number 04L 903 023 N

Ours has died, VW want £1112.49 for one :(

Many thanks Nige

Have you any idea how quick there are at getting them to the UK? We are due to leave for Germany a week Thursday :(

You can probably pay for faster delivery although the price goes to £621 due to the £136 exchange charge. I'd try a local motor factor or Euro Car Parts first

Cheers Fella, can only find up to 180amp so far online in the UK, shall try motor factors in the morning 🤞
I take it your existing one is totally shot?
Otherwise Autodoc are in Germany so you might be able to dodge all the customs charges/import tax if you can wait until you get there?
Guess it’s still cheaper than UK suppliers even when you factor those extra costs in though (something I still find with bike parts too).

We broke down on the way to Wales on Saturday, AA came out and put a meter on it, no load on the engine its just holding 12.5 volts, put the fans on or the lights and it dropped down to 11.1 volts. He put a new bigger battery on her and followed us home. Checked fault codes and said just the battery was not charging. Charged the battery for 24 hours put it on this morning just to turn the van around so I could work on it, she fired up but within 20 second battery light back on and dash saying Battery not Charging, took that on off and put my battery from our T4 on it and again, started, 20 seconds later Battery not Charging :(

Ah, I see. That sucks.
Hope you get it sorted in time for your trip.

There are usually only a couple of components that fail on an alternator - the voltage regulator and the diode pack. Both are usually supplied as separate components so you don’t necessarily need to replace the whole alternator. As these are often common components and are used across several different types of alternator, it may be easier (and less costly) sourcing these from a Bosch agent if you have identified the fault. They usually just bolt on to the back of the housing with a couple of screws and come with new brushes.

I had a look and it seems that your alternator was discontinued in 2019 and is no longer available according to the Bosch Classic site . Whether it’s been superceded or not I couldn’t see so your only alternative may well be to source the voltage regulator or diode pack.

I had this problem when the voltage regulator failed in my classic Porsche’s alternator. Porsche wanted two grand for a complete new alternator (they wouldn’t supply just the voltage regulator) and the lead time was several weeks but I managed to buy a Bosch replacement regulator for less than fifty quid from a Bosch motor factor and was back on the road within 24 hours. Good luck tracking one down.
