Best Transporter Engine ?

As the vulnerability and problems with the 200 HP BiTurbos from the factory is widely documented, I struggle to see why jacking up a single turbo 150 to 200 would be a good idea? Or am I missing something?..

It’s a completely different engine, with the inherent problems, and not solely down to the power.
 
Is it?.. don’t know just how different it is. And why would different be better to handle 200 HP?

I respect my 102hp engine. Can’t say I think it’s the best as having the 102 also limits you to a five speed box - which sucks on the motorway down to excess revs meaning more noise.

But reliability has been good so far (if you ignore the DMF which I guess can go on any transporter engine).

Being a 2014 I don’t have any adblue nonsense and being a 102 the engine is worked and gets warm - something diesels need unless you want them to die early.

The 150 in the golf is a lovely motor though.

It's not the power output that is the problem.

There are quite significant differences to the design, and it's those that are responsible for the reported faults.

I'm very curious to learn what these exactly are...

Following this subject (failing high power Transporter engines) for years around the web, I have read or seen very little about a common root cause. The what typically fails is wide spread across the web. The why not so much (besides the EGRs falling apart causing the 180s to eat aluminum(oxide). Speculations, opinions and assumptions in abundance though. I have some too. 🙃

In general, none of the lower powered single turbos suffer from the same problems. This is not because their designs are better or that different, 'cos all the engines have the same base design in their respective generations. While the higher power output as such may(...) not be the problem, the extra heat that comes with it could very well be.

Whether this is true or not, I still struggle to see why taking a single turbo 150 up to 200 HP with a simple remap is a good (long term) plan while so many of VWs own '200 ish' engines have issues. If it was mine I'd definitely fit a good oil cooler and increase the oil change intervals to 7/8 K miles.
