Battery Replaced Under Warranty, Vw Want To Know Why

Hi all,

Bit of a odd one, had the van fail to start for me 3 times recently;
1st - camping and just thought blowing up the air bed/charging phones had run it down over the 5 days.
2nd - sat on the drive for about 9 days while we were on holiday.
3rd - again sat on drive again for about 5 days.

So took it to the dealership and they said the battery is faulty and would order a new one and replace it under warranty, wasn't overly happy but at least it should solve the problem.

That was the 14th August and it's been fine since (touch wood).

Today the dealership rung and asked for me to bring it back, VW had asked them to double check everything and send them more details. Dealership don't seem to know why this is, all seems a bit off to me.

Van is a 17 plate kombi highline, 150ps, T32 with about 28k on the clock.

Getting a bit annoyed with VW now to be honest, bought a new van to avoid issues with old second hand vehicles and so far I have had; 3 new sensors, new fuel pipes, new EGR valve, 2 tyres, ACC plastic surround and a battery replaced under warranty.

Any thoughts? Or similar experiances?

Sounds like you have been pretty unlucky mate, personally I would just tell them no I’m not bringing it back, don’t see why you would be obliged too if they weren’t thorough enough when they had it

Sound like VW corporate arnt happy with the dealers diagnosis.

The dealer would have put in a warranty claim to replace the defective battery. But it seems like VW corporate may have rejected the claim.

I had a similar thing with a dealer. Where by VW corporate want more details for a warrenty claim on a 4M rear diff.

I think you are right, reckon VW have refused to pay your dealer for the warranty claim so now they are trying to get more info together to put it through again
At the end of the day VW and/or your dealer will screw you any way they can if it means they don’t have to pay out for something or can charge you for something so tell them to do one
If they really want it invoice them for a days wages that you will waste running around sorting their mistake and see if they still want it

In case you havent sensed it I’m having a very anti VW period, they take all your money for the vehicle they want to sell you then fob you off and feed you sh1t when (not if) things go wrong, bunch of a55holes !!

LOL . . .

@Pauly are you having "A MOMENT" there . . . .

Take a deep breath, . . . . get a beer, . . . . . count to 20 . . . . . and RELAX.

we all know all dealers are just 3rd party franchises and basically just run a business of selling us stuff to make a profit.

There ALL THE SAME . . . VW, AUDI, BMW, FORD etc etc etc etc.

So . . . . . . . when they fluff up, its down to us to be clever customers and stand our ground and make them pay for there mistakes.

Im not disagreeing with you at all - just be smart and try to make the situation YOUR advantage.

- Keep calm and carry on -

Could be that VW suspect a wiring fault and have instructed the dealer to take a closer look, because they don’t want your van to go up in flames?
I’d take it back but I’d be requesting something in return to make it worth your while. More worth your while than your van not burning, that is.

anything is possible . . . .

but id say its still all to do with the dealer and the warranty claim.

The dealers are supposed to follow the full diagnostic procedures setup for them by VW in ODIS or ESLASWIN and submit the full results with the warranty claim.

If the dealer just decided to fit you a new battery without the full diagnostic report then VW corporate will reject the claim and refuse to payout the dealer or supply them a new battery FOC.

so id assume the dealer is now out of pocket for a sparkly new AGM battery. . . . . and VW corporate are demanding he correct diagnostic report, or now payout.

Its a good system IMHO, its a way of VW corporate monitoring issues, faults and problems as they arise in the field.

all warranty claims are sent back to the "factory" with the full diagnostic report so that they can adapt and upgrade parts as they start becoming a problem.

all warranty parts that are replaced also have to be sent back to the "factory" for the fault to be verified . . . . .

thats basically how faults are identified and parts are upgraded and recalls arise.

so say for example they start to get a load of warranty claims for a leaking "EGR cooler", . . . . .
these would be replaced by the dealer under the warranty system with the diag report. . . . . . .
The leaking units are sent back to the "factory" and the issues is confirmed. . . . . . . .
The factory then makes the required design changes and upgrades to a new part. . . . . . .
Then all new vans are built with the new part . . . . .
its a continuously evolving process and in the most part works very well. . . . . . . .

I've had personal experience with this on my MY11 T5.1 rear diff (haldex unit) leaking, with may other user reporting the issue . . . . . about 9months later the factory redesigned and started fitting a new oil seal to stop the problem. Also had my dealer blow up the engine during a routine service !!! VW corporate wanted the full report and the old engine back.

The dealer had to pay and provide the engine at the time . . . . . . then sent the blown engine back . . when the report and engine was sent back to the "factory" they rejected the claim as it was the dealer tech that had caused the problem but putting 14ltrs of oil in it and cause the engine to blow. the dealer never got paid back . . . . . . . that cost them £4500 in parts and about 5 days labour! . . . . but thgey still tried charging me for half of it!!

i stood my ground, got VWCV UK involved and started a claim with them . . . . .

They then took over my "case" and dealt with the dealer . . . . . . . after months of arguing the dealer was made to take the loss and i got a sparkly new engine FOC. . . . . though the did just refit all my external ancilleries of the engine and kept the new ones !

So she went into the dealer today, must say was very impressed with their customer service;
Vacuumed (told them not to wash her (I prefer to do that myself)), put some fuel in and dropped off and collected me from my work.

Speaking to a service guy this morning he didn't seem to know exactly why. But after speaking to the service manager on collection he confirmed that VW has had some problems with batteries so they're trying to find the root cause and potentially gathering info for a partial recall.

Noooo. you were supposed to follow my advice and flick them the bird while disappearing into the sunset

:rofl: I don't think I'm cool enough to pull that off.

Was more curious to see what they'd actually do too (took pictures of engine bay and put a small pencil mark on the battery to see if they were going to change it again).

I'm having similar flat-battery issues and so is my mate - both batteries from MOLL, which I've heard are faulty. I've not spoken to my dealer yet (because I've just had eye surgery and don't want to raise my blood-pressure and pop my eye!) but I suspect they'll need to change it. To prevent any shortening of my life, I might just buy a new one myself too...….easier and less stress!

Interesting thread - the last 2 days (yes the cold mornings) my 1 year old Kombi 2.0 has turned over really slowly ............. yesterday I did about 60 miles so it shouldn't have been short of juice.

Should I be anticipating a battery / starting issue?

Mine is a 2017 highline kombi with less than 10k on the clock

Hi,
The battery on my 2017 T6 has also just died on me, on my drive. Called VW assist, AA man came and tested the battery before attaching jump leads to start her up.
Tester print showed that battery was knackered and needed replacing. AA man told me to take van to VW van centre, park it across the entrance up and switch off engine. That way they would have no option than to deal with it.
Showed Van Center the paperwork from the AA man, expecting them to say they would replace the battery there and then. I was wrong!
They said they would have to carry out tests on the battery themselves before anything could be resolved!!
Never mind, they gave me a shiny new courtesy van.............. as far as i'm concerned they can keep my van, It's been nothing but a massive disappointment from the day I took delivery of it, what with numerous squeaks and rattles from the dash, a tailgate that has been looked at 5 times and still not resolved, pulling to the left and now this!
What's worse is the attitude of the Van Center staff.
A friend of mine has already sold is 67 plate van, mine's next!!

Look at my highlight of the quoted post. Try simple wedges between the bottom of 'A' posts and the end of the dash, that has fixed a mysterious rattle on mine. It noticeably varied depending on how the sun had warmed the dash!

Mine failed earlier this week. Phoned VW assist and they sent a recovery van from a local garage who were only interested in loading up the van and dropping it outside VW at, the guy said the battery was now fine as he put a voltmeter on it, refused to have the vehicle taken away and parked outside VW's gate on an industrial estate, so phoned VW back who offered to send the AA. Again I refused and then they agreed to send 'VW assist' the following morning. VW assist came out at 10:15 the following morning, lifted the bonnet and he said immediately that I had one of the dodgy batteries. Just so happened that he had a few in his van, so he changed it for a new one and did a test on the old one on my driveway.

My recommendation would be persevere with ensuring that you get VW assist and not a local garage/AA.

Thanks Dan,
The AA man was sent by VW assist as they didn't have anyone available from VW at time.
At time of writing this, 12.20pm, I've had no feed back from dealer yet!
Gonna ring them this afternoon!!

Latest update, the Van Center have confirmed that my battery is after all knackered, and that they have replaced it.
I guess that's a result.
